Weeds, Season 1 - When life seemed so much more simple.

Hard to believe but with Monday night's episode, Weeds reached it's midway point through season 6. I had been wondering just how long a show that used to be about a suddenly-widowed upper-middle class suburban mother of two school-age kids--who turned to dealing pot "temporarily" to save her house, could fare now that she is 2 seasons away from all that. The crazy just keeps on coming next Monday. The family makes it to Montana, where Nancy is struck by the realization that Shane is her doppelgänger—and that's what's wrong with him.  Next Monday's episode also features possibly the most vomit-inducing subplot ever seen on cable television—and that's saying something.

(cont.) "Nancy" (Mary Louise Parker) is now homeless and both she and her youngest son are fugitives. She, IIRC because her entire neighborhood was torched as part of her need to cover her cannibis-dealing tracks and her son because he killed a high-level Mexican mafia woman who was threatening to kill his whole family. I don't beleive legitimate authorites know of "Shane's" involvement but the Mexican mafia does and that is probably worse.

Just the same, Nancy keeps trucking along, getting in and out of scrapes. Except for the "Botwins" currently using the moniker "Newman," and "Doug" (Kevin Nealon), the cast keeps changing too which would seem to bode ill for a series' longevity--but not here. Weeds was renewed for a seventh season and barring a re-boot, the family is going to have to continue to be fugitives which sounds pretty depressing but then again making a living dealing copious amounts of cannibis proably was not the best long-term situation anyway.

This Deb and Quinn hookup evokes too much of the Quinn -Trinity Killer's daughter hook-up of last season. We know he's after her brother. She's got to know the same. Will it then be a matter of them using one another for separate agendas? I hate the Quinn character as well as his big-ass gold chain, spray-tan, showy pinky ring and possible cheek implants (actor, not character). I was discussing this and the quick and dirty way of taking care of Quinn would be for Dexter to do a Doakes on him but I don't think so. I'd like to see Quinn gone--but gone to prison maybe--because the mystery of his checkered past has not been fleshed out--and Dexter is gonna need ammunition.

 

So Dexter premiered to record high ratings. Super! With a total audience of 2.34 million on Sunday Sept 26 Dexter's premiere was the highest since (gulp) The Outer Limits--which sounds sort of lame, doesn't it? Not lame-sounding at all is the fact that Dexter Season 5, Episode 1 the most watched Showtime broadcast of 2010!

There’s no denying that Michael C. Hall has a certain Dex appeal.

Case in point: ‘Dexter’s Season 5 opener carved out an audience of 2.34 million total viewers on Sunday night, making it Showtime’s most watched season premiere in 15 years (since ‘The Outer Limits‘).

The episode’s initial 9 pm airing drew 1.77 million viewers, while an 11 o’clock encore added another 575K.

The killer outing also represents a 22 percent increase from ‘Dexter’s previous season premiere night, and the most watched Showtime broadcast of 2010.

So the consensus is that Dexter is back with a vengeance ratings-wise but at least one "fan" describes the Season 5 premiere as "depressing." (see just below) To this person I recommend switching off the TV and getting some real-life experience because you obviously have not got one frakkin' clue. Guy's wife gets murdered = sad episode. Seriously. You cannot be old enough to watch Dexter and have such a stunted viewpoint. But maybe I spoke too fast. E!Online also describes episode 2 as "a bit slow -paced." Wow. Yeah? Everyone doesn't just go straight back to "normal?! Make you a bet. Dexter will be the first to get back to business as usual.

Q:  Dexter going to be moping the whole season? The premiere was depressing.
A: No! Dexter follows a blood trail (literally) to a fellow serial killer, and you know nothing puts a spring in Dexter's step like a good ol' hunting party. Episode two is also a bit slow-paced, but episode three starts to feel like the Dexter of yesterseason. The table, the plastic wrap and the knives are back in no time.

True Blood - Season 3 - 76 HQ Large Photo Stills (HBO) Putting TB Season 3 In Perspective

After mulling it over for  a couple of weeks I chose to read some of the reviews that have been offered up since True Blood - Season 3 ended. Beyond the Ken Tucker review ‘True Blood’ season finale review: ‘Evil Is Going On,’ and on, and on… ,  which he published right after the show aired and which I linked to, I hadn't read any reviews or "recaps"  until the last few days.

Next to Tucker's, I found the best* one here.

(*By best I mean more review-like in the old school sense of not being emotionally involved but rather assessing the episode in a non-partisan manner, providing some insights. Maybe I'm getting confused about "recaps" & "reviews"  but if so, there seems to be a lot of overlap no matter where I read about the show.)

True Blood fans and critics can be extremelyoutspoken about the show and IMO, that is a testament to how great it is. Many fans had reactions to the last half of season 3 through the finale that range from bitterly disappointed to angry to perplexed to worried to feeling betrayed, let down...it goes on...and on...and on.

For the critics, the majority of whom seem to have climbed on the the True Blood train because they were told to, it was easy to savage  the show. In some ways it feels like they were champing at the bit from the get-go to really lay into True Blood and spit as much vitriol at it as they could. And they sure did.

What some critics as well as the folks unfamiliar with Seasons 1 and 2 (sometimes the same individuals) fail to get is that True Blood is a  picture in the making. It is unfinished and therefore in some ways feels incomplete.

I believe creator Alan Ball was  concerned enough about the possible reaction from both critics and fans alike that his "just wait until season 4 video" was construed especially that reason. I sat through one "bad" season each of both The Sopranos and Ball's previous premium cable show, Six Feet Under ( went for 6 yrs. total). I think I loved the  series ending of Six Feet Under more than any other television show ending ever. Point is, both shows went on to produce more seasons and they were mostly good-to-great seasons.

Another complicating factor for assessing how "good" True Blood is and which is constantly hashed over, happens when one watches the HBO premium television show True Blood through the lens of having read the Sookie Stackhouse book series a/k/a "The Southern Gothic Mysteries" by Charlaine Harris (which so 'ya know, I did during season one of True Blood and since. I keep them separate just as both Harris and Ball have asked the audience(s) to do. Not hard for me as I have a short memory for most books I read years ago).

The books are written from Sookie's POV only but the show, which features Sookie as the central character, ventures further into other character's hearts and minds. This is Alan Ball's vision not Charlaine Harris'. Which is how it should be. Harris sold the rights to her Sookie Stackhouse series to HBO/Alan Ball to develop into a television series. She has and will continue to express her vision for Sookie through her books. The farther we get into Alan Ball's head (so to speak) the crazier this show may become (may) because AB is a boundary-pusher. He is unafraid to try things that may fail instead of playing it safe and never venturing far enough as many shows do, to be able to reach an unforgettable place.

OK. I think I can rest my case about why I'm unconcerned about how AB chose to end True Blood Season 3 and I'm totally jazzed about season 4. Can't wait to start hearing more about it!.

Here are some of my favourite moments from Season 3. EDIT/ If you have some faves, I' d love to hear about them. Mine are going to take a while to finish.

Here Sookie torments the charred Russell Edgington who has been quite cruel to her and those she loves (Tara via Franklin, Bill). Even more, Sookie has heard Russell's demonic laugh when something goes terribly wrong for someone else including Sookie herself. Have the fans who are up in arms because Sookie laughed maniacally as she poured Talbot's gooey remains down the disposal considered that she was dishing back to him what he put forth? Not good enough? OK. How about the equally likely possibility that Sookie has ingested so much vampire blood after nearly being drained twice in a matter of what, a week? that she's not exactly herself? Or, since we are on Bon Temps time which moves very slowly she's been through enough in roughly 8 weeks (3 seasons) to drive the most sane person to do things that they otherwise would not do? OK. One more and I admit this one I hadn't fully formed an opinion on until I saw the idea floated elsewhere (see link above) POSSIBLE SPOILER. You gotta know that faeries are not all sweetness and light. Take a look at the near-identical expression on Claudine's (Lara Pulver) face when she knocks the attacking Bill on his ass.

Dexter *SPOILERS* Episodes 5.03 & 5.04 'Practically Perfect' 'Beauty & The Beast' Julia Stiles IS Unrecognizable (PHOTOS) 5.09 BTS PHOTOS

 

Of all the "leakage" regarding tonight premiere (and beyond) of Season 5 Dexter (Showtime) this photo to me is most intriguing. We've got Julia Stiles standing in a marsh/swamp area, filthy and with superficial injuries.

She's been described previously as being severely "damaged," so wild guess here--whatever/whomever put her in this state is why she is damaged?

Julia Stiles' promo photo is accompanied by two other photos for Dexter, Episode 5.04, 'Beauty & The Beast.'

I think it's safe to say that both Dexter and Julia Stiles' character are in the same place (at the same time?) Are they aware of one another? If they aren't in the photos, certainly it is inevitable that they meet.  Also, Dexter appears to be disposing of a body--not going the usual Hefty bag route but instead using an oil drum. Why?

It's Dexter on his Mac. I can only note that he's wearing different pants than in the "swamp" photos. Other than that I'm getting not much.

More promo photos, these from Episode 4, "Practically Perfect" in which Dexter & Deb procure a British nanny to care for motherless Harrison, hence the title.

I think it is safe to say that the nanny pictured is being interviewed by Dex and Deb, her resume is being examined. She's being assessed for how she interacts with Harrison...the photos are really not that compelling, IMO, though again I may very well be missing something BIG. Here they are. All photos are credited at the end as they are from the same source.

Deb looks a wee bit concerned with the nanny's resume but why? Gaps in her employment? (j/k)

 

Apparently the nanny, who is now wearing different clothes can multi-task. Also, this "Harrison" is a different baby actor than the one above (thinner cheeks). It should be fun to watch the carousel of Harrison's now that he's past the "tote him around in the baby carrier stage."

Finally a bunch of BTS photo stills from Episode 5.09, "Teenage Wasteland."

Upon first glance I can see that 1. Batista is not incarcerated. Does that mean that LaGuerta will be the one in jail for a time (for reasons yet unknown)?

2. The police erasure board grid of victims & suspects shows the same name ("Boyd Fowler") repeatedly indicating that Miami has yet another serial killer on its hands. Fun times!

Important to note that unless one or the other is hangin' round the set (doubtful) both Laguerta (Lauren Velez) and Batista (David Zayas) are not in jail.That bit of storyline has been hyped repeatedly---with nary a detail. of course. We'll see where it goes. They both appear to retain their jobs as cops as of episode 5x09.

Synopsis: After Shane's kidnapping, Nancy attempts to get her son back by going head-to-head with Cesar in a Skee-ball "Hall of Fame" museum. Elsewhere, Andy, Silas and baby Stevie sit at a nearby diner, formulating ideas on how to help Nancy out. At the same diner but unbeknownst to Andy and Silas, Ignacio, Shane, and Doug await the outcome of Nancy and Cesar's showdown.

Silas proposes the hypothetical idea of giving Stevie to Esteban.

Interesting. Maybe it is not a brilliant solution but I thought of this, too. It's not like the narcissistic Nancy has particularly bonded with little Stevie Ray. The "Newmans" couldn't exactly "stop running" as Silas suggests, but they might not get killed which is inevitable given the trajectory they are currently on.

The reference to Dexter was a bit odd considering they've had very little opportunity to watch TV never mind pay for premium cable. Just the same, its a nice nod, timed well for the Dexter debut on Sunday.

Did Desmond Harrington (Quinn) get cheek implants during the Dexter hiatus? He looks radically different. Perhaps he's just using more bronzer? Yeah, that must be it.

Ausiello: New showrunner Chip Johannessen promised he was going to go there with Deb and Quinn, and, man, does he ever. And quick.

Given that there's not been any hint of sexual attraction (or chemistry for that matter) between Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) and Quinn (Desmond Harrington) this has to be grief sex for Deb and well, it is Quinn. Remember how fast he bedded Trinity's daughter last season? Which come to think of it makes him and Deb doing it a sort of disgusting dynamic.

Am I right that Julia Stiles plays Dex's girlfriend or Harrison's nanny on Dexter this season?

Exec producer Sara Colleton told us most emphatically, "God no! No no no no no no. It's way too soon" for Dexter to be thinking of romance. But! Dexter does hire a nanny—a virtual Mary Poppins who seems almost too good to be true. (We're keeping our eyes on that lovely Brit.) When an almost unrecognizable Julia Stiles does finally appear at the very end of the Oct. 10 episode, we realize why Colleton refers to her character as "damaged." So, so, so very damaged.

 Poor Deb has the worst luck in boyfriends on Dexter. Will her track record improve this season?

Signs point to yes! Who's Deb's (Jennifer Carpenter) lucky guy? Let's just say Batista (David Zayas) and LaGuerta (Lauren Velez) aren't Dexter's only interoffice romance this season. (See Ausiello above.)  Meanwhile, married couple Batista and LaGuerta could become separated—by prison bars!

Dexter: The Serial Killer People Love To Love - 'History Repeating': Lauren Velez

The New York Times did an interview with Michael C.Hall this week and enjoyable as it was I was really taken aback that the interviewer apparently is completely unfamiliar with the Dexter character and the show's audience:

It’s hard to imagine that even the show’s most hard-core fans could protest too much if Dexter’s fate were a grim one, in keeping with the punishments he has handed out himself. In the meantime Mr. Hall continues to see how human he can make a character who doesn’t believe in his own humanity.

I vehemently disagree that the show's "most hard-core fans" would have little to disagree about if/when Dexter meets a violent end. One only has to look at how sympathetic the responses have been to (Dexter's  wife) Rita's horrific death and the inevitable impact it will have on Dexter.

Dexter is the serial killer people love to love.

And, I believe Dex is exactly as the show's writers wish him to be. Why else would they repeatedly show us that he was so severely damaged as a child that who and what he is now is a direct result? What was the purpose of an entire season where we saw Dexter's slightly older serial killer brother kill without a conscience illuminating what a true serial killer behaves like if not to see the absolute contrast between a "good" serial killer and a bad one?

Nope. Absolutely not. The fans will be up in arms every bit as much as the LOST fans who were promised a satisfying ending and got instead the Island's glowing asshole.

The article was worthwhile when it stuck to the insights of both Hall and show runner Chip Johannessen:

Chip Johannessen (“24”), who joined “Dexter” as this season’s show runner, pointed to two things that continue to close in on the writers: the growing likelihood that Debra, a crack police detective, will discover her brother’s secret life, and Dexter’s gradual normalization, his progress toward “some recognizable human place.” When either happens, the show will be over.“I think it’s going to be up to Michael,” Mr. Johannessen said.

Mr. Hall, who is an executive producer of the show, will also have a say in the nature of Dexter’s fate. “With the way the fourth season ended, the suggestion seems to be that there are consequences. And it’s hard to imagine it ultimately ending well for him.”

“When I first encountered the character, my first question was: Is this a person who could ever be? Really?” Mr. Hall said. “And I’m still not sure. I think I’m coming closer and closer to believing that he’s real. And I think Dexter’s coming closer and closer to believing that he’s real too.”

TypePad Sells Self To Video Egg "Nothing In TypePad Changes Today"

I haven't done much personal blogging on TypePad for some time. Just the same, hearing today that TypePad has sold out is quite a shock--even though in hindsight, I suppose it shouldn't be.

This is partly my comment in response to the official announcement which ominously stated that "nothing in TypePad changes today." (my italics).

It's a bit more...direct in stating what is going on.

I've been w/TypePad since 2003. A Movable Type user suggested you as I'm not a techie-type (or I thought I wasn't). TypePad worked out smashingly for me. I so loved it here and I was pretty happy for you in your successes through the years.

Yeah, I tried Vox when you asked, I did the BETA thing, even sat on a TypePad consumer panel for a year. I've felt the shift. You're very, very interested in "big" bloggers. I'm totally not and I never will be because I hate selling myself. Monetizing a blog successfully is incredibly difficult. EVERYONE knows that. So one either goes for the bucks or blogs for free.

There's no point in regular bloggers staying with not-Six Apart. Monetizers--big bucks bloggers like HuffPost perhaps will find not-6A appealing.

After seven years I hate to leave and certainly I'll try whatever is coming but this is not good news at all for me. Please, one request, give me time to migrate my 7 years worth of writing to another host.

Death of the Fudgin'-A Brownies #brownies #birthday

To celebrate my forty-fifth birthday, E asked me to select a dessert recipe from our vast collection. I gave the decision much thought—should I choose a new and exotic recipe or one that had already proven itself? Should I pick brownies, cake, cookies, pie, or something offbeat and eccentric? We just happened to have made chocolate pudding from scratch last month, and because the result was underwhelming, I opted to return to the beginning, to where it all began, to the very first recipe I ever called my own: my original fudgin’-A brownies.

 

For those unfamiliar with the story, here’s a quick recap. My college roommate and supposedly best buddy, Moondog, had the unfortunate habit of hording his CARE packages, especially baked goods. I returned to our dorm room alone one afternoon and was soon tantalized by a rich, chocolate aroma. It took me a few minutes, but I tracked it down to the top shelf in his closet, where I found a half-eaten pan of homemade caramel brownies. One bite, and the course of my destiny was fixed. I had never tasted anything so delicious in my life. It was all I could do to save Moonie a couple of bites. 

I wanted more, so I went to Jewel and bought a caramel-brownie mix. The results were predictably dismal, but I noticed that they were nonetheless popular among guys and girls alike. Especially the latter. I thus began to explore the world of baking from scratch in a quest to replicate the splendor of those caramel brownies. I somehow became sidetracked, however, when I had at last created a remarkably tasty batch of fudgy brownies. They weren’t caramel, but they were very popular just the same, and friends often asked for them for their birthdays. We quickly became bored with brownies, so we explored other avenues of baking and then of cooking in general. Years later, I entered the fudgin’-A brownies and a batch of cinnamon cream cheese brownies in a bake-off; the latter won first prize, and fudgin'-A’s were ignored entirely. Only rarely would I ever again return to that classic recipe.

Until today. About to turn forty-five, I’m feeling nostalgic, so we blew the dust off the fudgin’-A recipe and once more worked our magic.

But not really. The magic of the fudgin'-A's is gone.

Somehow, our tastes have evolved over the years. The brownies taste the same, but the tongues tasting them are different. Yeah, they’re fudgy and nutty and gooey, but still, there’s nothing really interesting there. Not anymore. Not for us.

So adieu, fudgin’-A brownies. We had a lot of good times, and you made a lot of people happy in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. I’m still trying to lose the pounds you added. I’ll try to remember you not as you were today but as you were then: moan-inducing.

Love, Love, Love how LaGuerta (Lauren Velez) has evolved from the tough-as-nails, detached, get out of the way or I'll run you over, take-charge ball-buster into all that but with a touch more heart and vulnerability. Still far from perfect (aren't we all?) but much easier to care about. She too, has Dexter's back.

Poor Dexter. Rita was his anchor but the closest thing he had to that prior to meeting Rita & after Harry's death  was his sister, Deb (Jennifer Carpenter), who is obviously going to step up to the plate for him.

More than any other show, new or returning this fall, I've been looking forward to Dexter's return. Between Six Feet Under and Dexter, I feel like I've been following Michael C.Hall forever (which is just the way i like it-- he is such an immense talent).

NOTE:The clips are mislabeled, BTW. I switched the little blurbs about the scenes but could not change up the embedded titles. SHOWTIME:Wake the Hell Up! People should not have to hunt for your adverts,* in this case for your hottest show. I don't need to hunt much as I know where to look but still SHOWTIME...you have to start treating your unpaid interns better or they will continue to produce sloppy "work" like this..Geez.

The writers of Dexter discuss last year's finale and how it impacted the development of season five.

I imagine writing for Dexter is a dream job or would you bring work home and it could be more of a nightmare?

Nah. Dream job.

This season ought to be fun to write as its a total reboot. Dexter stumbles backwards in his process of painstakingly evolving into something like a normal human being (vs. feeling & acting as a.serial killer) at least at first he will. I'd be shocked if he did not "act out" his anger, guilt & grief, coupled with being totally overwhelmed by the here and now.

Prior to Dexter's season 5 premiere I'd like to note that I'm quite thrilled for Michael C. Hall  who "is" Dexter  as well as for his bride, Jennifer Carpenter, who plays his sister "Deb" on Dexter  that Michael looks great --it's a great relief to see him looking so healthy and I'm totally excited about the start of season 5 at the end of this month (Sept. 26)!

In the wake of Russell Edgington's on-air TV spine-ripping-the anchorman-stunt it looks like Steve Newlin has found the perfect time to market his wooden-bullet rifles (whose usefulness was so ably demonstrated by Jason on Tara-abusing vampire Franklin Mott).

Here's my list of what went right in True Blood Season 3 and after that, what didn't:

The Good & Great

• Lorena (Marian Klaveno) truly fulfilled expectations and beyond. Fun to watch and almost pitiable at times (almost) in her need for her "drug of choice" her progeny, Vampire Bill. She was perfectly cast as a vampire out of her time and almost out of her mind. RIP Lorena.

• Denis O'Hare as King of Mississippi Russell Edgington was another perfect casting choice. Stage veteran O'Hare brought a zany, over-the-top quality to the ruthless king of Mississippi. Mad as a hatter yet still deeply conniving, he is probably not done with our heroes quite yet. (Note: IMO, Edgington had to have made in his 3000 years, other progeny in addition to Talbot. Some most likely survive. They would feel his distress if not get an outright mental summons as Pam does from Eric and save him from the truly lame solution that Eric and Bill came up with to not kill Russell (WTH?!).


• Speaking of "our heroes" or True Blood's version of the "good guys," the promotion of the beautiful deadpan doll Pam played by Kristen Bauer van Straten, to featured cast status breathed new life (unintended pun) into all things Fangtasia. Quite a bit of her background was touched on including that she is only about 100 years old (younger/weaker than Vampire Bill), that she will go to any length to protect her maker, Eric--even if it means her own demise (fortunately, it did not), she is a former prostitute ("a long time ago") and "Pamela Swinford de Beaufort" is the sole recipient of Eric's property should he meet the true death. On a fashion note, as the season wound down, Pam was seen wearing a great deal less pink though she was still very fashionable. I'm wondering if the visual joke of "Pam in pink" is being put to rest? If so, OK by me --just don't ever ditch Eric's track suits & flip flops!
  
  
  
  • Most of the wolf-Russell storyline worked well. Certainly the guest actors like Grant Bowles ("Cooter") and Don Swayze ("Gus") contributed much.
  
  
  
  


• The Queen (Evan Rachel Wood) was used to much greater effect this year once she was hauled out of her Art Deco "palace." Probably my favourite scene involving the Queen takes place in Eric's dungeon when alongside the (until now) always-unflappable Pam she gasped in utter shock when, with one stroke of his silver-tipped cane, Russell beheaded the unyielding Magister.

• James Frain as the completely bonkers and very violent vampire Franklin Mott. Despite his insanity he knew how to get things done which explained the King's tolerance of him. Just the same he had it coming when, in the "too-much talking" phase of his almost-kill of his unwilling, almost-vampire bride Tara, he was discovered by Jason who wielded a wooden bullet-shooting rifle. Franklin found Jason most amusing, not realizing that his were not regular bullets which would have only temporarily injured him. Blam! One shot to the heart and Franklin was a puddle of goo.

• Alcide Herveaux (Joe Manganiello). Alcide did not have much to do this season other than look very hunky and help rescue Tara, Sookie & Bill from King Russell. He also, at her behest, escorted Sookie in her quest to "find Bill," to his ex-gf, Debbie Pelt's engagement party at a were biker bar. She was to wed top wolf, "Cooter." Later in the season, in self-defense during the Bill-Sookie-Tara rescue, Alcide killed Cooter, leading to Debbie's lament,"They killed my Cooter!"

• Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) and Hoyt (Jim Parrack). Yes, Hoyt is at least ten years older than Jessica (the actors themselves are but a few years apart in age IRL, I think). If you listened closely, at Merlotte's while talking to Sam(?) Jessica mentioned that she would have had her 18th birthday had she lived--so she's very legal, especially for the South. For Hoyt's part, until very recently he'd been living in the not-unsubstantial shadow of his "mama" his whole life. Hoyt and Jess have a lot in common in having been over-protected and sheltered for way too long as well as having grown up with a lot of emotional abuse. Now they are striking out together it seems, to take on the responsibilities of adults in the big, bad world.


• The sets. Unbelievable in their authentic look, the set designers of True Blood deserve raises and multiple Emmys. Atmosphere is a huge part of True Blood and these folks are as talented at their craft as the True Blood cast and writers are at theirs.


• The music and the soundtrack True Blood music video. See above: "The sets," then change "look" for "sound").

I read a comment somewhere: What about the poor schmucks that unbury Russell? which never crossed my mind but yeah, that could very much happen ona construction site. What we got was was a very dumb "solution" to the Russell issue. I mean, Bill has vowed and now is killing "everyone who has tasted (her) or knows of (Sookie's) powers."

I'm looking forward to more Joe Manganiello in Season 4 as he not only looks warm & fuzzy but he brings a very big dollop of emotional warmth as well--something that none of the vampires can ever truly pull off--its in their nature to be a little chilly. It won't be all teddy bears and squirrels and bunnies though--Alcide  is after all, a werewolf.

The Bad & Ugly

Almost to a fault every single actor on True Blood is really good at what they do but like any role you need something to sink your teeth into ( pun intended). Both Tara and Jason are chasing their tales (misspell intended) with either dull as dirt storylines (Jason) or with stories that seem to simply set them up as the foils for other people ( Tara).

It pains me to say this but both characters are superfluous. If  each character were asked, "What vital function do you serve in True Blood?" I believe the answer for Jason would be, "I play the resident dumbass, pussy-obsessed, aging  jock," who (since he's part faery too) has a charm that seems to work on everyone. Tara plays the victim. Period. That's all the poor girl has done for three seasons. She the angry victim lashing out, she's the sad victim contemplating suicide. She's simply a victim that sticks around to get further victimized.

In season 3, Tara being paired up with Franklin brought her story to life though she was still the angry/scared victim. After he was offed by Jason, Tara reverted to her default angry mode and canoodled with the new, angry Sam.

Jason has in a completely mondo bizarro turn of events become the "mayor" of the inbred meth-making hamlet of "Hotshot." This is cringe-inducing and I really hope they keep his story tucked away for as long as possible. Also, Jason's new gf  for whom he declares his love just after meeting?--she's boring. Really, really bland and there's no chemistry whatsoever with Jason. They met and almost "did it" in the woods, met again and "did it" on his sofa and now it's a big deal romance. Just one question. Why?

When we last saw Tara she had scissored off her hair and was leaving Bon Temps in a white convertible (or so it appeared after a series of goodbyes). My hope is to let her be gone for most or all of of next season, then attempt to give the character a re-boot--pretty much the same hope I have for Jason.

Both Tara and Jason serve as Sookie's only surviving "real" human family so killing them off would seem unwise--yet keeping them on only drags the the show down and wastes the talents of both actors. ***

True Blood closed out its season on Sunday night with a series of double- and triple-crosses. The series didn’t so much end with a cliffhanger than it left multiple subplots dangling, as though creator Alan Ball decided he’d just clean up this messy season next season.

IMO, the best sequence in the finale where Sookie awakens, pissed off from near-death due to draining--again--due to Bill's duplicity. Thoroughly disgusted, she agrees to watch the silver-bound and burned-by-the-daylight Russell while the "creepy, cold" vampires Pam, Eric & Bill rest. Russell tries to cajole Sookie into freeing him but she tires of him and his BS and turns quite mean herself. Later, help arrives in the 6'5" form of Alcide Herveaux (Joe Manganiello--enjoy because this has to hold you until summer 2011) who admits to Sookie that he's thought a lot about her--even in his dreams--since they last parted.

At the risk of being tracked to their booted minivan, Nancy and Andy decide the family must split town. Consequently, Silas must leave behind the dream of college life. Meanwhile, Shane provokes a mommy group. Elsewhere, Cesar and Ignacio are hot on Nancy's trail with their hostage, Doug, in tow.

It was nice to have Doug's (Kevin Nealon) levity back for "Bliss," Episode 4 of Weeds' Season 6. It is sort of an adjustment when they change up the cast the way they seem to do each new season. Though I was not a huge "Celia" fan I thought Elizabeth Perkins did a nice job with what she was given. Like Celia, neither her TV daughter "Isabel" nor ex-husband "Dean" are pertinent to the "road movie" that is Season 6. Their absence for me is less noticeable than hers, tho'.

I'm enjoying the season--Justin Kirk "Uncle Andy" reliably steals every scene he's in.

I'm surprised that they have not done much at all with guest star Linda Hamilton. She's sort of rough-looking and stern and ...she sells medical marijuana (if you can afford it) and "trimmings" a/k/a "shake" to Nancy.

Nancy offered to "go down" on her as barter and didn't seem to wish to take her up on it.

"Hmm, Crispy Russell was disturbing to look at, and awesome at the same time. Too bad it was a mostly underwhelming season finale."

I agree that the True Blood Season 3 finale, "Evil (Is Going On)" was a bit of a disappointment. At  the 40 minute mark I was nervously eying the clock wondering how the heck *everything* could be tied up--thinking "well, they must be running over" but nope, the show was its normal length and nope, they indeed did NOT tie up much except for The King of Mississippi, Russell Edgington played by the sublime Denis O'Hare. Even here,  his face obscured by his burnt, dead flesh Russell Edgington is very effectively arrogant when burning in the Fangtasia parking lot and especially while trying to cajole /manipulate "Miss Stackhouse" into setting him free.

Everything looks very exciting...the music is fantastic, the set looks amazing, the actors look...grown up!

I don't think there are going to be enough superlatives to describe this film by the time it premieres, just before American Thanksgiving. Hard to believe, but some people are surprised that the cast has aged over the near-decade that the Potter films have been a part of the HP franchise but hey, look in the mirror--you have, too!

Oooh! Cool beans! Love both these actors. Time to start thinking of some really good Q's for them.

IMO, one of the best things about Season 3 was "Pam" having more screen time and seeing just how deep her relationship with Eric goes. If I had to ask her a question I'd probably go all fangirl and want to know what it's like working with ASkars. He is so serious as Eric. When they yell cut does he stay in character on set or does he revert to the real Alex who I've heard is pretty fun to be around?

Or maybe I'd ask Kristen what it's like having both a brand new husband (musician Abri van Straten) and an expanded role on one of the hottest television shows happen in the same  year? A bit overwhelming or  the best year ever or...?

Joe is a bit harder because I've only seen him in interviews and True Blood and feel I don't "know" him very well. Maybe try to pry some info about season four True Blood in which he'll be a full cast member?

Oh no! Just when I was thinkin' that maybe just maybe Sam & Tara could work out their tortured souls together Sam decides to get all honest with Tara! Remember how the sort of level-headed Sookie reacted when she found out about Sam's true nature? And now Tara , still trying to recover from Egg's death and Franklin's physical & sexual abuse...gah! No way will she be eating those pancakes (fried in bacon grease--yum!)  if Sam blurts out the truth now. <nail biting>

OTOH, she took to Alcide pretty quickly and he's way more scary-seeming when he shifts...

Unless he cheats he's going to get his fangs handed to him--or he'll have to hand them to her as she likes to make earrings of them (joke).

I'm curious how they can bring her back in to the story this late into it.

Actress Julia Stiles talks about her love of Dexter and excitement for being a part of season five.

Hmm. Not sure if Julia  Stiles watched Dexter before she was hired for a guest starring arc in Dexter Season 5. She mentions that she "watched all of season 4" with baited breath and now working on Dexter season 5, she reacts in a similar fashion upon reading the scripts.

No matter. I'm guessing that like, me the Dexter story is so compelling and fantastically ensemble-acted that we can deal with the proportionally insignificant amount of gore.The meat of the story lies inside Dex's head. Woohoo! won't be long now' til the season 5 premiere (on Showtime--check your listings)!

EDIT/ A little bit about the character Stiles will be playing: 

"the character’s name is Lumen, and she’s described as “psychologically and physically damaged.” Her introduction to the cast presents Dexter with a dilemma..."

There are many Lafayette & Jesus shots which I'm thinking must mean that they will have a decent-sized storyline in True Blood season 4. Who doesn't love Lafayette? And Jesus so far has been very easy to embrace as a character.

I'm pretty excited about the possible direction for Lafayette & Jesus in season 4 and I love how Lafayette, a character known to us since season one but long dead in the Sookie Stackhouse series books, is growing. When we first meet "Lala" he already possess the foundation for what's happening to him at the end of Season 3. He sees right through people as if...he had some kind of extra ability. The way the story seems to be unfolding is that Lafayette, beyond the obvious "something extra" he possesses had previously unknown-to him voodoo/ black magic- based mad skillz and coincidentally or not, new boyfriend does as well!

Anna Paquin (Sookie) readys herself for both Debbie Pelt and Russell Edgington to come for her.

Sookie and Debbie had a real brawl which ended with Sookie dragging the blades of some sewing scissors across Debbie Pelt's cheek. As of now, the second to last eppy of Season 3, their business is still open-ended...so I expect more from Brit Morgan in season 4--especially because Joe Manganiello will be a series regular as Debbie's ex-bf,  the still-pining, Mississsippi were, Alcide Herveaux. Speaking of:

Big ol' piece of eye-candy but a comic-book geek, IRL. Have to be charmed by Mr. Manganiello. At least I was--and am looking forward to seeing how the Sookie & Alcide dynamic plays out in True Blood Season 4.

This scene with a hungry Jessica accidentally showing her fangs to Arlene after-hours at Merlotte's when the two were all alone except Jessica's next meal "Curlers" (below), was very funny. Carrie Preston as "Arlene" is a hoot.

As with all maker-progeny vampire relationships Bill and Lorena's was very strong.

In a few words: She loved him in her own "twisted" (pun intended) way and he hated her. Or she obeyed her true nature and he refused to after (under 100 years but above 50) years of bloody binging with Lorena... I've forgotten exactly how many. Perhaps he has as well. ;)

This was simply a very cool scene esp. visually right through the science-fiction-y "Authority,"  identities shrouded, appeared on the big screen to hear Eric's story-- with both their queries and comments sent through an earpiece Nan Flanagan wore.

Good to see Bill in the sunlight, clad in white but alas, his true nature overtook him--again and he tried to fang Claudette, Sookie's Faery godmother. After she zapped him she indulged him by listening to his request to explain "what" ("What are you?") she was so he could tell Sookie what "she" is--to "protect Sookie." The audience was not privy to their convo. and many people seem to doubt that Bill told Sookie the truth about his encounter with Claudette. Time will tell...

Aww. One Two more.
Both Eric (Alexander Skarsgård) and Pam (Kristen Bauer van Straten) are in a very tense scene with one another (and the attorney writing Eric's will) but they are dressed nearly colour-coordinated and they both look fantastic!)

The King (Russell) is closing in after Eric's murder of Russell's husband of 800 years, Talbot. Pam is very worried about Eric and this time she does offer him a suggestion--"find a way to use her" (Sookie) to save his skin, she implores Eric in this scene from late season 3.

Don't forget! There's no  newTrue Blood episode this week (September 5) because of Labour Day. The season finale of True Blood is on September 12!

I gotta admit I had not seen the performance until now, only hearing from my teenage son who, I suspect, has taken to watching "Glee," that Jimmy Fallon opened the 2010 Emmys with "Born To Run" with the Glee cast and "Hurley" (Jorge Garcia) from LOST and that Fallon did a credible job of performing as Bruce Springteen (writer/original performer of the song).

I've never liked anyone but Bruce attempting the song because every version I've heard until now sucked incredibly, but but in Fallon's version a number of singers were integrated into it  taking on the parts they were most suited to and it actually worked--though of course the song belongs to Springsteen. They only borrowed it.  Bruce Springsteen owns 'Born To Run' --in every sense of the word.

Why is one of the high points of an admittedly good Emmy show not showing up until almost a week after the broadcast? This blurb explains it all (or tries to):

True Blood Promo 2 for Finale - Major SPOILERS for Season 3 Finale / Season 4

True Blood is re-airing the latest 3 episodes next Sunday. At the end of the promo, it gives us more of a glimpse into the Season 3 finale on September 12, 2010.

I have some really-truly spoilers that if you read on you will know NOW what some of the results of the cliffhangers of the finale will be. More specifically, you'll know who lives.

I have to tell you, I'm pretty shocked. SPOILER ALERT!

(The actors involved (except one) have interviewed that they are coming back but I'm giving you this version which matches theirs.)

I don't know if like me, you are having mixed feelings about True Blood's imminent Season 3 ending. Don't get me wrong, I have no doubt that it will be awesome but this season went by faster than both one and two--it was so jam-packed with new characters and beefed-up parts for some old favourites. It's just so hard to say goodbye. OK. Now I'm sounding like a sappy love song so let us get to something a bit more hardcore, shall we?

Update 1.04.11/Denis O' Hare had not been signed for True Blood season 4, which is about one-third done filming going into the four episode. According to E! he proably won't be back for a season or 2!

We have the scoop: Believe it or not....  all of the aforementioned newbies will be back on True Blood for season four...So it looks like all this pretty faces up there survive next Sunday's "bloody" (per Alexander Skarsgård) season three finale...

Den is is set to return to the HBO hit next year, according to sources, but don't expect to see Russell too early in the year. We have it on good authority (Alan Ball's) that initially witches will reign supreme, but I'm told the plan is for Russell to reappear later in the season.

 Sounds to me like Edgington is somehow driven off or thought to be disposed of. Wonder if the "cement truck scene" spoilers from early in the season has anything to do with it? I'm going to need a plausible explanation how he did not go *poof* in the daylight faster than Godric did with Russell bein' 3X as old and all. As for Lafayette's lover, Jesus (Kevin Alejandro), Nelsan says, "We're partners in crime now, my boy toy, so he will be back." Adds Kevin with a knowing grin: "I'm hearing rumors about that, too. I've never been a part of anything this big before." (see below) Happier times for "LaLa" and Jesus (Nelsan Ellis, Kevin Alejandro)

Sam's wayward little bro isn't going anywhere either, although he's mastered the tease. When asked if he'll be back, Marshall told me: "Yeah, I am. But I mean, hey! How do you know?! Come on, now! Spoiler alert!"

I don't think we are supposed to forget that at roughly this age Sam did the exact same thing to Maryann (Season 2). My guess is the shot that Sam takes at Tommy is either a warning shot or it misses it's mark. I don't know how Tommy could possibly "fly away" (which he has done before) with a load of cash like that. Perhaps Sam will shoot him in the shoulder or arm and keep Tommy "grounded" for awhile.

'Holly' (Lauren Bowles)

And rounding out the ranks as a newly-minted series regular (she told us herself after hitting up the Emmys with her sister Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is Lauren Bowles, who recently joined the show as resident Wiccan Holly.

Also, in re: Arlene Q: Are we going to see something happen with Arlene's baby situation before the end of the season on True Blood?

A: As a matter of fact, Mrs. Carrie Preston assures us we will…well, kinda. "Arlene is still very conflicted. But there's going to be a resolution to the conflict," she says, "But it's also going to be open-ended." Either she's speaking in tongues or my Emmy (lack of sleep and too much ginger ale) hangover is worse than I thought. Does that make any sense to anyone? Carrie's equally wonderful hubby Michael Emerson weighed in on the baby drama, saying, "I mean, we have to see the baby," to which she responded, "If there is a baby…" Now I'm really stumped. She's not pulling a Terri Schuester is she? Or preggo with some sort of supernatural somethin'? The mind boggles.  

In re: the "new" Sam Q: I cannot believe the way Sam's acting on True Blood. Tell me it isn't permanent, please! A:...Sam Trammell (says) Sam's not-so-pleasant adventures are just beginning and will extend far into True Blood's fourth season. Weeds Sneak Peeks: 'You Can't Choose Your Family' 'Could've Eaten Twelve'

Hard to believe with this episode that the sixth season of Weeds is one-third over. As Justin Kirk who plays "Uncle Andy" Botwin says in the video interview (below) this season plays like a road movie with the Botwins again having picked up and moved on but this time In deeper shit than ever. I was sort of mulling just how can they end this series? Does Nancy wake up next to her "dead" husband Judah to find it was all a very bad dream? Or perhaps she never was married to Judah and she awakes next to Andy? Just how do you write yourself out of the situation that this family is now in with drug and murder charges to face? Weeds is well-written enough and certainly has quirky charm to spare that I'll continue to tune in to find out "how it all ends."

Season 6, Episode 4 - 'Bliss' Nancy cuts a deal with the hotel's concierge to sell hash to hotel guests. Meanwhile, Silas and Andy also make unusual progress with their day jobs. Elsewhere, Shane and baby Stevie keep themselves occupied by joining a 'mommy group'. Back at Ren Mar, Doug is interrogated by Cesar and Ignacio for information on Nancy.

My second favourite scene of  True Blood Episode 11, "Fresh Blood."

In the alone time Jessica and Hoyt share at Bill's house after she saves him from Tommy in his pit bull form by ripping open her vein and feeding him, Hoyt listens as Jessica explains the realities of her true nature. Although momentarily taken aback by her confessing that she accidentally drained and killed a trucker, Hoyt accepts that Jessica simply cannot stomach Tru Blood and can only feed on humans. Without hesitation but with slight trepidation Hoyt offers his own blood to Jessica.
