Publish quickly. The network rewards the first person to show up on the scene to describe what is going on, and it's important to get a version of that story underway promptly.

This is so succinct. It almost makes the writing process sound easy!
In seriousness, I tend to get fixated on getting the first draft just right, before publishing. It is probably the worst mistake I make as it hangs up the rest of the process.

 

The rest:

Edit at leisure. The editing process takes time, and it shouldn't be unduly rushed. If necessary, work at it one paragraph at a time, and publish each paragraph after it is finished. Every single piece of work can be improved at any time by an edit.

Make the first version coherent. A first version that stands alone and accurate to itself might just be a concise headline and a lead paragraph. Each subsequent edit can grow the whole thing, but the first thing that hits the wire should be so fully composed that there would be no more reason to keep working on it.

I imagine writing for Dexter is a dream job or would you bring work home and it could be more of a nightmare?

Nah. Dream job.

This season ought to be fun to write as its a total reboot. Dexter stumbles backwards in his process of painstakingly evolving into something like a normal human being (vs. feeling & acting as a.serial killer) at least at first he will. I'd be shocked if he did not "act out" his anger, guilt & grief, coupled with being totally overwhelmed by the here and now.

Prior to Dexter's season 5 premiere I'd like to note that I'm quite thrilled for Michael C. Hall  who "is" Dexter  as well as for his bride, Jennifer Carpenter, who plays his sister "Deb" on Dexter  that Michael looks great --it's a great relief to see him looking so healthy and I'm totally excited about the start of season 5 at the end of this month (Sept. 26)!

LESBIAN VAMPIRE KILLERS is British composer Debbie Wiseman’s gothic romantic soundtrack to Phil Claydon’s horror comedy. Unlike the spine-tingling, terrifying quality often sought in traditional horror scores, Wiseman’s compositions are at times melodic and playful, contributing to the comedic nature of Lesbian Vampire Killers’s storyline. LVK is an interesting, varied soundtrack that embodies each of the various qualities of the film it accompanies and expertly employs both The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and The Crouch End Festival Chorus.

One of the coolest features of the Lesbian Vampire Killers soundtrack is how the track tracks were named, many of them named for quotes from or scenes in the film. In particular, “I Know Something Really Wrong Is Happening Here, But Is There Any Chance We Can Just Ignore It?” and “Have You Been Hanging Out With Vicars?” are two compositions whose names are direct quotes from the film — and some of the film’s funnier quotes, as well.

In seriousness, you probably couldn't care less about Evangeline Lilly but for a model with no acting experience prior to LOST just like Josh Holloway as Sawyer, I think she did alright. She rocked the action scenes. When Holloway ran it looked like he had a load in his pants. Why didn't you bitch about Holloway's acting chops? Because the :ahem: writers gave him some occasionally witty dialogue. What did they give Kate? A craptastic backstory, a three-way romantic dilemma and a penchant for wandering the Island after...usually Jack or Sawyer. Oh yeah. She took Aaron home as a consolation prize.

I can't really tell you if "spoilers" are good or bad. I don't believe they in any way dissuade people from watching a show that they would have otherwise watched. One might guess that interest might be peaked prior to viewing an episode that had been "spoiled." Theoretically, more people might tune in to an episode to find out if what has been said to be revealed, actually plays out.

My experience as a viewer is that it does take some of the enjoyment out of viewing after one learns at least a key point or two about an episode.

As a writer however, it enhances my ability to form an opinion because I've had time to mull it over. In entertainment news/opinion time is of the essence. I don't' have a roster of volunteers at my disposal to crank out an uber-timely post so any help I can get via insider info prior to the show is greatly appreciated.

Just as the LOST Spoilers site owner thanked people on the inside at LOST, seven of which provided leaks about LOST production, casting, filming locations and much, much more, I extend a thank you to him and to his site for the wealth of material they have made available--most of it supplied with only the request that it is correctly attributed (see link).

With that said, the following thumbnails will take you through Episode 16 of 18 episodes of LOST including a major incident in which there are many deaths. If you click the thumbnails you will read stuff that includes who dies through episode 16. People who are truly invested in the show may be quite upset about not only the deaths but other key plot points that are revealed way before we are supposed to know about them.

For my part, I'm pretty bummed about one death, a strong character since the very beginning. I hoped against hope that it wouldn't happen and now I'll be bummed through May. I guess I deserve it for being a spoiler junkie.

One more thing. I have multiple blogs and I've written both here and at The Love You Make which is where my LOST work is currently. Ultimately, I'm merging the blogs. WordPress shall win out over TypePad but only geeks care what platform I'm serving on.

Battlestar Galactica: Synopsis/Screen Caps: Someone To Watch Over Me/Tricia Helfer on Jimmy Kimmel Video and on Six

The caps above are from a SciFi preview of the next episode. I'm not getting much in terms of things startling. I don't' think Hotdog dies, despite all his grimacing.

Kara is iffy and her quest to discover her "roots" so to speak has been a long one.

I've noticed the writers sneaking in references to the show (pilot) "Caprica" which they have pitched to the SciFi/NBC network so Kara and her possibly being the relative of someone not-human that will be be on that show is possible. It remains to be seen if it's plausible.

And Chief or Tyrol, no one seems to call him Galen much, and Boomer/Sharon Valeri. I say, why not? They sort of rushed it with the killing of Cally and deep-sixing of little Nicky. I'm pretty convinced that the plan was for Boomer and Chief to have a second encounter even if it is not as fun as the first go-round (was until the end).
That's all the American preview is dolling out for next episode.

I've read differing opinions on the "Ellen Entertains the Fleet" (Deadlock, the last) episode and really, Ellen Tigh was never likable. And I did wonder how much of the Final Five's original personalities come back. Already, Tori has acted drastically differently than the Tori of the right-hand-of-Laura Roslin days. Who says their personalities were wiped completely? Good old Bro. Cavil quite possibly couldn't have been that talented.
Tyrol and Tigh have been very different since finding out they are Cylon so why would it be so hard to buy that Ellen is Ellen but she switches gears when she's around certain people?

I agree. WTH!?! with all the lingering shots on Adama mourning his baby,the Galactica? It's been shown again and again that Adama is highly pragmatic when it comes right down to it. This is out of character for him to flip out so much--unless Laura's imminent death is taking it's toll. Maybe so. He's only human.(Sorry.) I give EJO a pass but they could have cut two of those scenes (not the one with a lingering shot of a 6's cute, perky bum though, leave that in).

In many ways "Deadlocked" was about loss and most of us don't like to be reminded of that harsh fact of life when we are trying to be entertained. Maybe the writers sort of rushed through it ,too.

I'm hoping Someone To Watch Over Me is good.

Boomer is being reintroduced is sort of cool. Plus I'm a big fan of Aaron Douglas as Tyrol.
Starbuck dealing with something not Sam is a good choice for next week.
And whatever is happening to the Galactica--it can make easy sense depending on a number of situations, including the most obvious one.

There are numerous reasons which I won't blather on about here about why Sarah Palin is not a suitable candidate to be a "72-year-old heartbeat" away from the presidency.

The one that irks me the most has nothing to do with her gaping lack of experience, her hideous beehive hairdo, or her advocacy of hunting animals from a helicopter.

It's an odd little quirk of mine that I can't like any public figure if they clash harshly with what I think is right vs. wrong. If an actor for example, is busted repeatedly for busting up the face of his wife--forget it. I won't watch him on-screen--ever. If a politician like Joe Biden gets hair plugs that are so obvious a legally blind person such as me can see them--and he lies about it--I won't ever take him seriously again.

See, I'm allowed to think any way I want and it doesn't have to be rational to you.

In the case of Palin, I think she's a bad mother. That's it. No bad mothers as Veep.

Is it a double standard to think that four months after giving birth to a child that will forever require vast amounts of time and attention that person shouldn't run for the second highest office in the land? I don't care if it is.

I've been extremely lucky that both my kids had no obvious birth defects. But I know quite well the day-to-day challenges of a couple of moms whose children do have birth defects with similar characteristics to Palin's son. These women are very hard at work trying to make biggest strides they can with their babies in these crucial first two years. Palin, who may not have even resumed her normal cycles yet has leaped at the chance to be in the White House despite the fact that there's no way that she will have the time required to raise a Down Syndrome newborn.

I can't speak to what her spouse is doing in his involvement with the baby. The press states that Todd Palin works two jobs. Has he taken a leave of absence for take care of his and Sarah's newborn boy? On this I cannot opine. But no matter what he's doing she does not need to be throwing these precious months away trailing after John McCain.

And then there's the matter of her pregnant child. Just as her mother took the increased risk of have a baby with birth defects by giving birth at age 43, Sarah Palin's 17 y.o. daughter's risk of complications are increased notably due to the fact that daughter is still an adolescent.

Sarah, go home. Your family needs you. Don't worry. The country can get by just fine without you.

Battlestar Galactica, S409, "The Hub" Recap - Screen Caps, Quotes, Roslin-Adama Love Scene *SPOILERS*

Synopsis:

"Pursuing the Resurrection Hub at the whim of the Hybrid, a team of Viper pilots and Cylon rebels become uneasy collaborators as they formulate a battle plan to unbox the Threes and destroy Cylon resurrection forever. Meanwhile, Roslin and Baltar try desperately to communicate with the panicking Hybrid and Helo discovers a disturbing characteristic within one of the Eights."

There were only two big revelations in this episode. The first was made to Laura Roslin, where a hopped-up- on-morpha Baltar confesses his involvement in the destruction of The Colonies. For this she attempts to murder him.

The second revelation is that, according to the number Three, D'Anna, Roslin is not the final Cylon.

Number Three answering Laura Roslin's question:

D'Anna Biers: Suppose you've got some questions for me.

Roslin: Yes I do. I'd like to talk about the five Cylons in my fleet.

Biers: So you know about the Final Five?

Roslin: I know they're supposed to know the way to Earth.

Biers: But you don't know that you're one of them.

[Roslin freezes shocked]

Biers: [Bursting out laughing] Please your face! [Roslin looks relieved and smirks] Oh, it's ridiculous. No. Look, I'm not giving you any names. Not until I feel like I'm safe. 'Cause information is all I got, sweetie.

 

 

Picking up where the last events of "Guess What's Coming to Dinner" ended, Laura Roslin, Karl “Helo” Agathon, and Gaius Baltar are brought before the rebel Cylon basestar's Hybrid. After a Number Eight reconnects the basestar’s Hybrid, it unexpectedly jumps the ship.

During the jump, Laura Roslin finds herself in empty corridors of the Galactica. As she looks around, the deceased priestess Elosha appears behind her. They hug, but the vision stops at the moment the jump completes with Laura finding herself back in the Hybrid's room.

Roslin asks questions about the Hybrid's abilities as the Eight tries to get information from the data-font, but the Hybrid jumps the ship again (and again and again), and Roslin finds herself yet again in the company of Elosha on the empty Galactica.

 

The two end up in sickbay where they find the sole patient–Laura Roslin--near death.

The Eight determines that the Hybrid is "panicking" due to Natalie’s injury or death. Gaius Baltar tries to calm her claiming that the Hybrid “likes” him, but after a few moments, the Hybrid jumps again. Roslin's vision continues, and she sees Kara Thrace, Doc Cottle, and Bill and Lee Adama standing over her death bed.

Elosha speaks to the dying Roslin, chastising her for her lack of empathy.

talk to the Hybrid about the Opera House vision. Neither meets with success.

The Eight tells Helo that the Hybrid is following the Resurrection Hub and discusses an attack strategy with him.

On the Resurrection Hub, a Three, D'Anna Biers, is awakened by Cavil (#1) and Boomer whom Cavil refers to as his "Pet Eight ."


They tell her of the Cylon Civil War and appeal to her to help through her knowledge of the Final Five.

Three makes a disparaging remark about the Eights' , capriciousness, commenting on Cavil's pronouncement about the Eight model's tendency to be "passionate allies"-- "until they see something shiny."

In the basestar hangar, Helo and an Eight give a mission briefing to a number of Sixes, Eights and Colonial pilots. Several pilots, including "Redwing" McKay and "Gonzo" Pike, express concerns about their safety and the reliability of the Cylon pilots.



A Six retorts that the rebel pilots are just as well trained as the humans, and the Eight reminds them that they learned to trust Athena, so they can also trust their rebel allies.



After a jump, Baltar begins talking to a Centurian about hierarchy and religion, asserting that the Centurion is loved by God as well. Soon after, they are both blown up.

 



On the Resurrection Hub, Boomer comments with alarm on the arrival of the rebel basestar. Cavil tries to convince Number Three to talk to the rebels and defuse the conflict, but she replies curtly and threatens to "shout out the names" of the Final Five.
 

Boomer reports that the rebel basestar has launched 25 Heavy Raiders. Outside the Hub, the Heavy Raiders release the Vipers they have been towing behind them. The Raiders attack defending basestars, while the Vipers head towards the Hub.
 


Cavil deduces that the rebels are attempting to destroy the Hub... and that would make death permanent for Cylons. On hearing this, Three breaks Cavil's neck and Boomer flees.



Missiles take out the FTL drive on the Hub. Helo and the Eight head towards the Hub in a Raptor. On the Hub, they encounter D'Anna Biers and the dead Cavil.

  
Baltar continues to to blather on about Centurian rights, but as the basestar is hit by a missile salvo, the explosion destroys the Centurion and seriously injures Baltar.




Baltar is carried to a bed by two Marines while Roslin carries in a medkit. Roslin orders them out, bandaging Baltar and injecting him with morpha. In his drug-addled state Baltar talks to Roslin about religion, telling her that he once harbored terrible guilt...he tells Roslin that he unwittingly gave the Cylons the access codes prior to the fall of theTwelve Colonies.

Shocked by Baltar's confession, Roslin tries to kill Baltar by removing his bandages. As he loses blood he repeatedly begs her to stop.
 





Helo announces that he has D'Anna Biers and orders a nuclear strike on the Hub. The Vipers fire nuclear missiles into the Hub, destroying it and at least one of the two enemy basestars.

D'Anna Biers: And with a whimper, every Cylon in the universe begins to die.

Baltar continues to beg for his life.

There is another jump. In Roslin's vision, William Adama stands over a dying Roslin, while Roslin and Elosha watch them.

Helo brings D'Anna to Roslin... When asked about the Final Five, she jokes that Laura Roslin is one of them--->provoking this reaction from Roslin:

...upon finding out that Three was "just kidding."
 D'anna refuses to provide any information until she feels she is safe; the information being the only thing she has now that she is the only Three left in the universe. She also appears to have a really bad headache.



She says she will tell Roslin who the Final Five are after she is taken back to the human Fleet.


Later, Roslin sits alone listening to the Hybrid. As the Hybrid jumps she has a final encounter with the dead priestess, Elosha.

Admiral Adama's risky strategy of waiting alone for the basestar to rendezvous pays off as he sees the basestar jumping in. In the landing bay, he meets Laura Roslin.

Adama [Breaking the embrace; looks into her eyes]: About time.


They (finally!) embrace.

 
Thoughts:

The whole Laura and Bill scene was so satisfying. Despite all the other heavy action going on this scene grabbed me the most by far. Two stellar actors playing out the moment we've (they've?) been waiting for for years.

It was beautifully done--except
Rant/ why did we have to have the stoopid nod to Star-stoopid-Wars and Adama not returning Laura's "I love you"??? She's on the verge of death, people! Unspoken words are not going to cut it. Haven't you heard about "saying" the words?" Laura had to have that hammered into her thick head by a dead person. What does Bill need?!
Why do the fanboy showrunners not know how to write a decent love scene??? This has frustrated me to no end and in this scene I was satisfied in part just because they have given us so little to hold onto with these two that this made up for all the scenes we got cheated out of./end rant

Lucy Lawless was flawless ;) as D'Anna Biers. She just eats up every scene she's in. Funny, cynical, strong, and vicious--D'Anna is all of these and more.

Just Another Post About The Weather

Now that the weather is has been acting nicely for a few days, we've been lulled into the notion that spring! is here! I've gotten on the bandwagon too, pounding the drums of joyousness in solidarity.
If only it would stay this way, continuously moving closer to better weather. But reality does intrude rudely. We don't like to think such thoughts but when the inevitable occurs we are bummed because "the weather sucks.' And it seems to suck more because we've enjoyed such delicious samples of the yumminess that is spring only to get rudely shoved back into reality.

Yes, reality. It seems much more than a concept when it rains for a week straight and you've just about forgotten what the sun looks like.
Not that anyone needs reminding, but for me, I will continue to relish the good days, acknowledge the "bad" and try not to let "weather" monopolize too many of my blogs posts for fear of being accused of "writing another post about the weather." (Just kidding on that last statement.)

Though Dirty Sexy Money, the lush, most expensive first-year drama ever made has been off the air for more than three months, word out of Paley TV Fest '08 is that it will be  back on the air in about six months (Sept '08) according to DSM creator Craig Wright. Some snippets of information about Dirty Sexy Money: Season 2

• Daniel Cerone, formerly at the helm of Dexter has joined DSM (What is that?--one Degree Of Separation with Peter Krause (Nick George) and Michael C. Hall (Dexter) having played brothers Nate and David Fisher respectively on one of the best shows evar, Six Feet Under? Hopefully, Cerone will do some much-needed anchoring with DSM--a show which seems in danger of floating away amidst the froth at times.

• Though politico Patrick Darling's character's "personal reality (is) cloaked in darkness...his journey toward openness shall bring him success.” possibly in the form of "Carmelita Darling."

• Nick George's dead father, Dutch: is he really dead? As Billy Baldwin was quick to point out, "Did you ever see a body?” The storyline was to have wrapped but due to the prolonged (now ended) Writer's Guild strike, it'll have to wait for S2.

• Unfortunately we have not seen the last of Brian, Jr. To that I say, Remember the old axiom about kids and dogs: a little of either goes a long way, especially in a nighttime soap.

Wannabe Wordsmiths

I belong to a forum. Anyone can read it but one of it's primary functions is for those of us who do or have done paid blogging to discuss things--from technical issues to monetary rewards or lack thereof, to other stuff which can be of our choosing.

Recently a blogger expressed the opinion that the people on the forum were falling victim to "censorship" and he began actively recruiting  people on the forum to join a new forum he'd started.

Now there's a host of people who visit the forum to which I belong--from advertisers, seasoned bloggers, brand new bloggers, paid staff and everyone in-between. From the lack of responses it seemed that he did not have a lot of success in drawing from our forum to his.

I've been on forums before and of course there has to be rules in place as a forum exists as a community. What I've found on this forum is, on a scale of noose-like restrictiveness to almost no interference at all, is that this forum tries to be as hands off as possible and let the boards flow. The most involvement I've seen is when a duplicate thread (new topic) is introduced and that thread gets merged with the other or, someone asks a question in the wrong section and the thread is moved so the thread author will move likely get what they are needing.

I've seen very little of what New Forum Guy called censorship and when there was such a thing it was justified. The censorship takes the form of the topic not being able to have any more comments added to it. The thread becomes "locked."

So New Forum Guy has started a couple of new threads on the forum to which I belong and each one IMO, seemed more to promote his new forum than to discuss a relevant topic. I wasn't the only one to notice the self promotion and they called him on it. This provoked him to insult one of the volunteer moderators on the boards. She told him she didn't appreciate it and others including me, tried to give her support with kind words. New Forum Guy came back to the thread and threw more road apples around, this time provoking an all-out love fest for our mods.

Then something surprised me. A commenter downplayed it all by saying the thread comments "were just words." Just words?!
We've all heard the old Internet axiom, "you can't convey in writing what you can in person." Oh yeah? So the Constitution is "just words" and the Bible and the Koran and everything Shakespeare ever wrote--do I have to go on? These very important pieces of writing, each conveying thoughts, ideas, beliefs, stories--all in WORDS.

This is the 21st Century. We are speaking less and less to one another and more and more we communicate by typing our messages. If we feel what we are doing is "just words," than why are we doing it?  And since we are doing it frequently via instant messages, texting, weblogs, email, membership in forums, boards, and in gaming, these words are being used a great deal. And isn't something that is used frequently of import? And further, since we are using words frequently shouldn't we be getting better at expressing ourselves this way? When are we going to stop using the excuse that what we type is "just words?"
That reasoning was never truly factual and it's far less so now.

Untitled (Revised)

When the minor symptoms first appear she denies them, downplays them, brushing them aside

She refuses to believe that Sickness shall soon be her closest companion

When she can so longer deny that Sickness has a stronger will than she does anger and frustration settle in and become her companions as well

But they are a burden too heavy to carry; after a short time Sickness overwhelms them, too

After several days of being confined to her bed she realizes this and begins to bargain

If I can only be well be by tomorrow I will...

But Sickness has taken what it wants--her health

It wants nothing else

The understanding of this sinks in; there is simply no bargaining to be done

A sense of defeat overcomes her, self-pity and short temperedness  set in enveloping not only her but her loved ones, too

Soon it's apparent that those she loves are sick of her being sick; the concerned inquiries offering assistance are now tired, thinly-veiled exercises in basic care

Anything special about this situation has passed

Finally, as Sickness continues to colour every waking moment she accepts the reality that she has no control

None

When Sickness is done with her, it will move on

And she will gingerly pick up the pieces and return to her life
