True Blood Season 6: Inside the Episode #1 (VIDEO)
I first watched the season 6 debut of True Blood on Sunday night--thought it was the best season debut since season three and upon watching it a second time, only had that opinion re-enforced.
The episode picked up exactly where we left off (Have they ever done that before? I'm thinking 'no'.) Bill (Stephen Moyer) drank the vial of ancient blood of Lilith, went *splat* in front of Sookie (Anna Paquin) and Eric (Alexander Skarsgård), then went haywire, tearing the Vampire Authority building to pieces and burning it to the ground.
As you may recall, everyone, save for Alcide (Joe Manganiello) and his people, were in the VA building for one reason or another. The entire Vampire Authority was wiped out by both their own hand and that of our heroes--save for Eric's sister, Nora (Lucy Griffiths) who was a sort of double agent.
Sam (Sam Trammell) and Luna (Janina Gavankar) were there to save little Emma who was made to stay in her wolf form by her 'owner', Steve Newlin (Michael McMillian). Newlin escaped, leaving his wolf puppy behind. After taking human form (as Newlin) one more time, Luna found it was to be her last and she died shortly thereafter, making Sam swear he would protect Emma./End scene
Bill, nude and bloody, flew away ('like an evil, bloody Superman') and not until he summoned his sire, Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll), did they get a clue what happened to him. Upon arrival at his mansion, Sookie and Jessica found Bill relaxing on the porch insisting that he only wished to talk. His sentence was nearly cut off as Nora flew in to attack him; he deflected her only to have Eric attempt to stake him. In a choke-hold, Eric struggled with Bill, until Sookie (Anna Paquin) staked Bill through and through. Bill reacted with some pain but more annoyance. There was a collective gasp as he pulled the stake out of his body, with a warning that he would not tolerate any more funny-business. The whole episode upset Jessica greatly and she sided with her maker in ordering the gang to get off the premises./End Scene
Back at Fangtasia, as Pam (Kristen Bauer van Straten) poked around in search of a bottle of TruBlood, there was a knock, then an small explosion at the front door. A SWAT team had arrived to serve papers on Pam, ordering her to close Fangtasia. When Officer Not-Friendly got a bit threatening toward Pam, her progeny Tara (Rutina Wesley), threatened the SWAT guy who promply shot her in the gut with a special bullet./End Scene
Eric walked Sookie home and thanked her for saving him, then handed back the deed to her house (written in his own blood). There was a call-back to the first time they met, when Sookie wore a dainty white dress to Fangtasia (season 1) and Sookie lamented that she never foresaw how far off the way she envisioned her life would become. She wished to reclaim that part of herself that the while dress represented and so, close to tears, rescinded her invitation to Eric to be in her house./End Scene
Across the cemetery, Bill and Jessica had a heart-to-heart-talk about his need for her to act as a sort of checks and balances for him and his behavior. Though she was eager to help, she acknowledged that he probably wouldn't like it if she called him on his stuff, but they made the agreement just the same. Bill feels he is still Bill Comptom though obviously 'something greater', and he proved that when Jessica's glass of TruBlood slipped off her nightstand and he appeared to reverse the process leaving the blood un-spilled. Later, when searching for answers in the Vampire Bible, Bill became disoriented and heard his name being whispered from his office. He entered to see Lilith and other nude, bloody women. /End scene.
Rutger Hauer, who is credited as playing both a faery relative of Sookie and Jason's,'Niall Brigant' and 'Macklyn Warlow,' a vampire who was among Lilith's first progeny, finds an angry, anti-vampire Jason (Ryan Kwanten) walking the long trek home after having his fill of both his sister and her vampire friends. The stranger offers little information about himself. Eventually, Hauer's character reveals he knows much more about Jason's family than he should, prompting Jason to immediately conclude that he is the vampire who killed his parents and while still a passenger in the car, tries to shoot the driver with a wooden bullet. It fails. /End Scene.
Alcide and his wolf pack are among the least-compelling aspects of the show so I was very thankful that they had only two fairly brief scenes where, in wolfpack ritual, Alcide ate a piece of the deceased packmaster, the pack all shifted into wolves and they went for a run, and Alcide stopped to have sex with Rikki and some other sexually aggressive bitch./End Scene
We touched base with Andy Bellefluer (Chris Bauer) and his faery quadruplets. Andy was feeling helpless and sorry for himself so Arlene (Carrie Preston) gave him a pep talk, then they went inside and both Arlene and Terry (Todd Lowe) gave him diaper lessons. The next morning Andy found out that he wouldn't be needing diapers./End Scene (cont.)
NEXT WEEK (SPOILERS):
Finally, Louisiana Governor Burrell (Arliss Howard) revealed himself to be a sleazebag, who in public declares that he wishes to control the vampire population who are currently out of TruBlood. He told human citizens to arm themselves with wooden bullets and he's ordered all vampire business closed and imposed a nightime curfew on all vamps, which would effectively starve them out, forcing them to violate the law and to be captured.
The season six debut episode was well-paced, well-written and well-acted. It was compelling and entertaining with bits of humour interjected between the blood and sex. Really, a perfect balance to what seems like a rejuvenated True Blood. Next week's episode 6.02 promo video is above, along with some HQ screencaps. You can find many more screencaps from next week's episode after the jump.
Warning: I've spent the past two months or so screencapping True Blood sneak peek previews and teases and have pulled matching caps from all of them. There are scenes that are NOT in the preview for episode 6.02 but are obviously from it (same characters, in the same setting, in the same clothes) so, SPOILER alert!
