JOHNNY DEPP Shares True Inspiration For His TONTO in The LONE RANGER #johnnydepp #loneranger

It was clear from this first photo released from The Lone Ranger set last month, that Johnny Depp was sticking by his word to make his Tonto a radical departure from the Jay Silverheels' Tonto of the the 1950s-era television show.

But ever since the photo still of Depp and Armie Hammer as the Lone Ranger was made public, inquiring minds have been asking: What exactly is the origin of his black-and-white painted warrior?

“I’d actually seen a painting by an artist named Kirby Sattler, and looked at the face of this warrior and thought: That’s it,” Depp said in a recent interview. “The stripes down the face and across the eyes … it seemed to me like you could almost see the separate sections of the individual, if you know what I mean.”...

Depp explained that the lines of paint on the Native American’s face looked to him like a cross-section of the man’s emotional life.

“There’s this very wise quarter, a very tortured and hurt section, and angry and rageful section, and a very understanding and unique side. I saw these parts, almost like dissecting a brain, these slivers of the individual,” he said.”That makeup inspired me.”

 The painting also provided inspiration for Tonto’s headdress. “It just so happened Sattler had painted a bird flying directly behind the warrior’s head. It looked to me like it was sitting on top,” Depp said, which led him to another eureka moment. “I thought: Tonto’s got a bird on his head. It’s his spirit guide in a way. It’s dead to others, but it’s not dead to him. It’s very much alive.”...

For his part, Depp has said his motivation to play the character came from disliking how Tonto was relegated to  subservience in the old... TV series. While the look may not be historically authentic, Depp wants Tonto’s character to be honorable and self-reliant...

“The whole reason I wanted to play Tonto is to try to [mess] around with the stereotype of the American Indian that has been laid out through history, or the history of cinema at the very least — especially Tonto as the sidekick, The Lone Ranger’s assistant,” Depp told EW. “As you’ll see, it’s most definitely not that.”

HBO Watches' 'Dragons 101.' Very informative with nifty details about Daenerys’s three baby dragons:

With the rest of season 3 except for the finale episode summaries available above, one has a pretty good notion, if you've read the books, where the story is going. I'm just barely getting ahead in the 2nd book upon which this season is based, 'A Clash Of Kings.'

Speaking of Dany and her dragons, we have not seen too much of them of late. Hopefully this week will bring more of the Mother of Dragons and her entourage.

Game of Thrones - Daenerys' Rebirth / Birth of the Dragons VIDEO:

Dany’s Dragons

Drogon – Named after Daenerys’s dead husband Khal Drogo, he is the largest and most aggressive of her three dragons. He has black scales, his horns and wings are blood red, and he shoots a black flame with streaks of red. He is believed to be the reincarnation of Balerion “The Black Dread”. Drogon’s egg was black with scarlet ripples and swirls.

Rhaegal – Named for Dany’s brother Rhaegar Targaryen, who died at the hands King Robert during Robert’s Rebellion, he is green with bronze scales. Rhaegal’s eyes are bronze-colored, which glow with their own heat, and his flame is orange-yellow with veins of green. Rhaegal’s egg was deep green with shiny bronze flakes that disappeared when Dany turned it.

Viserion – Named for Dany’s brother Viserys, his scales are cream but his horns, wing bones, and spinal crest are gold. Viserion’s teeth are described as being shining black daggers and his eyes look like molten pools of gold. He shoots a pale gold flame with red and orange streaks. Although he is cream in color, Viserys is commonly referred to as the White Dragon. His egg was pale cream and streaked with gold.

Dragonstone (GAME Of THRONES)

Native to the eastern continent of Essos, dragons are mythical creatures that have been extinct for over 150 years. Dragons breathe fire, they prefer to cook meat before eating it, and emanate great heat from their bodies. They have even been known to steam during cold nights. Dragons are relatively intelligent creatures and are capable of forming extremely strong bonds to the humans who raise them. It is believed that they are tied to magic; and since their extinction, the power of magic has diminished and the winters have grown colder.

Dragons were first discovered by the Valyrians 5,000 years ago and they mastered the art of raising them, eventually using them as weapons. The Doom of Valyria brought a sudden, drastic end to the Valyrian Empire and, ultimately, the only three dragons that survived were owned by the Targaryen Family on Dragonstone....

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 new poster art, this time featuring the dragon from Gringotts that our heroes escape on.

This dragon guards the Gringotts Wizarding Bank, and when Harry Potter, Ron Weesly, and Hermione Granger go there in Deathly Hallows: Part 2 in their horcrux quest, they encounter the Gringott's dragon. As you might guess from the nifty banner, hilarity does not ensue.

I found this a very edge-of-your-seat book (title, same as film w/out 'Part 2') sequence for the young wizard trio, so I'm really looking forward to seeing it played out, outside of my imagination.

The end begins when Harry goes back to Hogwarts to destroy the final horcruxes, but when Voldemort finds out about the mission, the biggest battle begins and life as they know it will never be the same again.

I agree with this comment from EW (especially the 'light-and-stubble part'--very well-put! The ick factor is unmistakeably there.):

Note how the light catches Harry’s stubble… when you’re not mesmerized by Voldemort’s fingernail. I also love that they went with this strong image, with the wand at the center and the line “IT ALL ENDS 7.15″ and didn’t care that it left no room for the title of the movie....

Last week, the cover of the forthcoming True Blood graphic novel, True Blood, Vol. 1: All Together Now was released to the delight of all Truebies with serious cravings for anything NEW 'True Blood.' 

EW has now revealed a pair of covers for the second installment in the True Blood Graphic novels series (no title yet).

  

 

The plot of the second edition (which is a compilation of the next 6 issues of the True Blood comic-book series) will of course revolve around Sookie Stackhouse, whose 'world is turned upside down when contaminated bottles of Tru Blood cause the Southern Vampire population to go berserk.'

Introduced in this next batch of comics are characters not in the first series including Jessica Hamby, Hoyt Fortenberry, Terry Bellefleur, Arlene Fowler, Jesus Velasquez, and Rev. Steve Newlin.

Speaking of the Reverend, Michael McMillian, who plays the Fellowship of the Sun leader Reverend Steve Newlin on the HBO True Blood series, is also a co-author (with Marc Andreyko) of the second series of comics.

“The plot kicks off when bottles of Tru Blood are contaminated with this mysterious ingredient that makes vampires go, basically, insane,” McMillian reveals. “They go crazy. They lose sense of all sort of moral center, and they pretty much go feral and attack anything and everything in sight. What happens is they reach Bon Temps and the lips of a very beloved vampire character. Sookie and the rest of the characters are trying to figure out: Who’s behind the contamination? How can they save their friend? That’s sort of where the whole arc starts off.

... I’ve always been interested in the larger mythology of this bottled blood, that there’s a corporation behind this. (I'm thinking LOST and the Dharma Initiative--sound about right? --Cyn)

(What would happen if they had a PR disaster like the BP oil spill? ...it would be a huge disaster... What...if they have to pull bottled blood off the market? What will vampires do?... There’s (the) immediate problem of if ... Tru Blood is recalled, what are vampires going to do (and how will it affect humans)?I’m interested in the dynamics of the relationships between humans and vampires.” --Rev. The enthusiastic McMillian pointed out that until the Season 4 HBO True Blood series returns in Summer, 2011, this series will have to tide fans over.

“We’ve got the privilege of being the only 'True Blood' that’s available for fans before the fourth season starts up in the summer,” he said... It’s going to be really exciting and action-packed and beautiful.” (Michael McMillian)

So, fellow Truebies: have you ever read a comic book or graphic novel? Would this series possibly pique your interest?

I do like the 'Jessica' cover version, especially the graphic style which to my eye is more literal. I can see Deborah Ann Woll and that's nice. The 'Bill' cover is good but I couldn't tell you with any certainly that the cover boy was for sure Vampire Bill-- not until I scrutinized him anyway. It's not that I mind the graphic artist following his muse. It's just easier for me to go with the story if the characters resemble the ones I'm used to seeing in the HBO series True Blood.

LOS ANGELES - Johnny Depp's next movie will likely reunite him with director Tim Burton for a big-screen incarnation of the gothic vampire TV soap opera "Dark Shadows." The duo's collaboration has been more than three years in the making -- Depp was obsessed with the series as a child -- but Warner Bros. has now set an April start.

Depp will portray Barnabas Collins, a vampire living in a Maine manor who is searching for his lost love.

Now that Depp has made his decision, the other projects he was flirting with will have to find new actors, unless of course they can be wrapped up by April. For example, Depp's name has been mentioned in connection with Kathryn Bigelow's "Triple Frontier" as well as with Universal's "Snow White and the Huntsman." Depp and Burton last worked together on "Alice in Wonderland," one of the year's biggest hits.

I watched Dark Shadows on the tv each day after school for a couple of years--and I was barely old enough so I hope the 3.5-years younger (June 9, 1963) Depp watched it in reruns. Doubt it, though. Depp probably watched it first run at age I dunno, Update/ 5, 3 thru 6.? He was very young for this program. Cool. Helps explain even more about him. But who was watching him?

I am a 'go' to any Depp-Burton collaboration. Always something to love about them. Long may they run.

Watching the video one cannot but be impressed at how Johnny Depp slips into the skin of this nebbishy-seeming character without effort. I mean, he looks just as Depp does--the gorgeous Johnny Depp we know and love-- yet with his gestures and vocal tone he conveys someone else completely: Frank Taylor, ordinary guy--or is he? Can't wait to find out!

The Metatextual Meaning of the Big Gold Hole - A Nice Fit

First, it's an apt metaphor for the entire series, in that it contains the promise of a blinding revelation, but it's hard to find, and if you do find it and try to penetrate it, it vanishes and in the process spews out all this bullshit.

I can only enjoy LOST if I think of it as an old skool DC comic book.

Does anyone else besides me remember LOST being referred to (by one of the characters out -of-character, I think) as "Craphole Island"? That could also be a nice fit for "gold hole."

As LOST's last season continues barreling to its May 23 conclusion, the LOST writers have given us some scenes that are sure to be referenced as "the best." I nominate this one, LOST - 6x06 "Sundown" - End Scene - ('Catch a Falling Star') HD in it's entirety but specifically Kate's (Evangeline Lilly) part in it.

'Kate' has MANY detractors, in fact she's probably more reviled in the fan community than Ben (Michael Emerson) ever was--and his is a 'good' kind of bad. But Kate is NOT bad. She just been written that way.

Think about what they gave this character to work with. Not a lot.

For every time Kate has been "bad" and here's the rub--she gotten pilloried more for her sexuality (Jack & Kate & Sawyer)--for every time she's been a bad girl, she's been badass twice as often.

This scene of unspeakable devastation & carnage shows Kate, though completely aghast at what she's experiencing still having the presence of mind take up a dead man's rifle & arm herself. It reminded me of the scene in Season 1 in both its similarities & contrast.

In LOST S1, the plane had crashed, bodies littered everywhere. Kate needed to be able to help pull the group together and at Jack's suggestion she needed to find some sensible shoes in which to do so. The only shoes that looked about right for her were on a corpse. She made her way to the corpse, fighting fear all the way and gingerly removed it's shoes and put them on. Contrast that scene with this. She's in a similar devastated situation--seemingly in shock but this time without anyone to prompt her into action. No need as her survival instincts are on full alert. She glances at a fresh corpse, see what looks like a working rifle and plucks it away from the body to take as her own--all the while taking in the insane scene of a reanimated John Locke with a ragtag clutch of Others and Claire--and Sayid!--all now followers of UnLocke. So much was telegraphed without words--only eye contact between UnLocke and Kate. No more hatin' on Kate. Kate is great.
