We started going to Goebbert's prior to the common use of digital cameras--so I have tons of photos--in boxes that I should scan to add to this bunch which only cover the last five Octobers.***

We always try to pick an Indian summer-type day to stroll around Goebbert's Pumpkin Farm. The best day to go is a weekday for the thinner crowds--and you save $ on anything that takes tickets.

I guess because I'm not a farmer's market get-up-at-dawn-type, I really savour being able to pick through the many mini gourds at Goebbert's until I find the right colour and texture combo for my cornucopia, now on the table in the living room. The kids have always liked finding the weirdest or ugliest ones they could find, too. Just a really pleasant, relaxing couple of hours, always finished off with yummy baked apple or pumpkin goods.

Death of the Fudgin'-A Brownies #brownies #birthday

To celebrate my forty-fifth birthday, E asked me to select a dessert recipe from our vast collection. I gave the decision much thought—should I choose a new and exotic recipe or one that had already proven itself? Should I pick brownies, cake, cookies, pie, or something offbeat and eccentric? We just happened to have made chocolate pudding from scratch last month, and because the result was underwhelming, I opted to return to the beginning, to where it all began, to the very first recipe I ever called my own: my original fudgin’-A brownies.

 

For those unfamiliar with the story, here’s a quick recap. My college roommate and supposedly best buddy, Moondog, had the unfortunate habit of hording his CARE packages, especially baked goods. I returned to our dorm room alone one afternoon and was soon tantalized by a rich, chocolate aroma. It took me a few minutes, but I tracked it down to the top shelf in his closet, where I found a half-eaten pan of homemade caramel brownies. One bite, and the course of my destiny was fixed. I had never tasted anything so delicious in my life. It was all I could do to save Moonie a couple of bites. 

I wanted more, so I went to Jewel and bought a caramel-brownie mix. The results were predictably dismal, but I noticed that they were nonetheless popular among guys and girls alike. Especially the latter. I thus began to explore the world of baking from scratch in a quest to replicate the splendor of those caramel brownies. I somehow became sidetracked, however, when I had at last created a remarkably tasty batch of fudgy brownies. They weren’t caramel, but they were very popular just the same, and friends often asked for them for their birthdays. We quickly became bored with brownies, so we explored other avenues of baking and then of cooking in general. Years later, I entered the fudgin’-A brownies and a batch of cinnamon cream cheese brownies in a bake-off; the latter won first prize, and fudgin'-A’s were ignored entirely. Only rarely would I ever again return to that classic recipe.

Until today. About to turn forty-five, I’m feeling nostalgic, so we blew the dust off the fudgin’-A recipe and once more worked our magic.

But not really. The magic of the fudgin'-A's is gone.

Somehow, our tastes have evolved over the years. The brownies taste the same, but the tongues tasting them are different. Yeah, they’re fudgy and nutty and gooey, but still, there’s nothing really interesting there. Not anymore. Not for us.

So adieu, fudgin’-A brownies. We had a lot of good times, and you made a lot of people happy in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. I’m still trying to lose the pounds you added. I’ll try to remember you not as you were today but as you were then: moan-inducing.

The second part of the excellent interview TV Guide.com did with everyone's favourite maenad, Maryann, on the HBO series True Blood was released on Monday.

After watching True Blood's Episode 4 "Shake and Fingerpop," it became clear why they had to delay the article until after the show had aired. Michelle answered candidly when asked of the nature of her character--that she's indeed a maenad though perhaps not one straight from Wikipedia. A maenad (pronounced mee-nad) is as Michelle explains, a a mythical creature that revels in chaos and "all those things that people hold themselves back from — food, sex, booze, drugs — she wants to push people into their vices, their purity, their ecstasy. That's what she considers happiness. It's not a nefarious or villainous thing in her mind. She wants everyone to feel the same glory and joy that she feels. She wants everyone to join the party."

Michelle goes on to explain that in her opinion, Maryann is not evil--just very different--that she does not even have evil intentions (it's been disclosed by True Blood that the bull-headed thing with the claws killed Miss Jeanette). I find this fascinating because if Maryann were judged in the real world she would be a murderess and probably lots of other bad things, too. But Michelle does not judge her character and I've heard the same from other veteran actors when they take on a role. Since they inhabit the character--almost become it, they can't exactly go around hating that character in order to portray him or her effectively. So the actor finds a way to justify the character's intentions and I believe the articulate Ms. Forbes does a wonderful job of explaining Maryann. Here's a bit more: TV Guide.com asked Michelle, who had stated that Maryann's goal is pleasure with ecstasy a preferred state, why then is Maryann violent?

Michelle answered, "Maryann lives in a different moral construct than the rest of us. Tenderness, violence — they're the same to her. The more that somebody is feeling alive and in their adrenaline and feeding that appetite for what we're not supposed to do, the more that they're in what she considers purity. That is her life blood; that is her excitement.

All those things that people hold themselves back from — food, sex, booze, drugs — she wants to push people into their vices, their purity, their ecstasy. That's what she considers happiness. It's not a nefarious or villainous thing in her mind. She wants everyone to feel the same glory and joy that she feels. She wants everyone to join the party."

The "little guy" turned 16 year-old today--plus started his first day of junior year in high school.

School seemed uneventful. I was a bit annoyed that we didn't coordinates things so Chris could get something to eat at school. He has no official lunch period--just half of AP physics, second half--and no one remembered that his lunch card, paid up as it is, wasn't usable until he'd gotten a new mugshot and that was later in the day, during gym class.

He seemed to have a good time with his two good buds yesterday when everyone got an all you can spend card for Gameworks. Plus they left after over 3 hours of play and still had more than half the game time available to them on their game cards--for another day.

Delicious Grey Poupon Recipes

When I think of mustard I think of bright yellow stuff that gets squirted, along with ketchup on a hot dog. When I hear the name "Grey Poupon" I think of something very different--a condiment that goes beyond ordinary and a ventures into dare I say, the world of the connoisseur.

The nice people who make Grey Poupon were looking for some opinions about a couple of new mustards they offer: Hearty Spicy Brown Mustard and Harvest Coarse Ground Mustard and since there are many recipes at the Grey Poupon website from Oh-So-Easy-Salmon to Spicy Street-Style Hot Dogs, my family and I were happy to oblige and venture forth to share our opinions.

My youngest son is the real salmon lover in the family and usually he asks for his salmon "plain" however his was willing to try the Oh-So-Easy Salmon made with Grey Poupon Harvest Coarse Mustard. For side dishes we made this with wild rice and a fresh tossed green salad. Admittedly, I was a bit skeptical that he'd enjoy his salmon "jazzed-up" but like it he did-- he went back for seconds and would have taken a third helping if he'd be able but he'd finished it off! I loved this recipe because it is packed with flavour and since salmon has a very distinct taste, the two complimented one another very well.

The second meal that we tried was using the Grey Poupon Hearty Spicy Brown Mustard for Spicy Street-Style Hot Dogs. I wanted to try a simple recipe and since we live in the Chicago-area and are accustomed to Chicago-style hot dogs--this meal was a really nice new twist on a tried and true favorite. Also, it takes a total of less than 20 minutes to prepare and put together! Grey Poupon includes five serving suggestions for this one dish, including a shortcut so this can be a super fast meal that can be enjoyed on nights when time is short or when you'd simply like to take a break from making a time-consuming meal. You can add a mixed green salad to this dish and voila! you've got a tasty and healthful meal.

I think this is about as random, as my younger son would call it, of a selection of author's quotes I could find. I like 'em all but having a last name (I still legally use the one I was born with) that begins with "McC" is a large clue to which one caught my eye.

Talking Turkey

I moved to the states from Toronto when I was six years old after my father was transferred here by his company. We drove the 500 miles to Toronto for most every holiday--Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and to the Lake in the summer so in hindsight, we kept one foot in each country. My grandmother passed away when I was 10 y.o. and after that we may have made the trip to Canada another time or two for Canadian Thanksgiving but what is more clear in my recollection of growing up is that we celebrated two Thanksgivings each year.

One in October for Canadian T-Day and one in November for American T-Day. We never had anyone over to eat with us as the whole family was so far away. (People really didn't just up and fly places like they do now, not as much anyhow.)

In the tradition of replicating one's family of origin's behaviour the family I've made doesn't do much for American Thanksgiving, either. I'm Canadian so even if I felt like being polite--it wouldn't mean much. I have a spouse and two children and it appears that they too think very little of T-Day.

I've heard Christmas described as a lot of work but Thanksgiving--for the cook anyway--is too. I'm on the fence about it but since we have turkey at Christmas plus have turkey products throughout the year I'm just not feeling the need to do it up.

I don't mean it in a downer sort of way but I think I'm continuing a tradition just for the sake of...tradition when in fact Thanksgiving Day is just another day to me.

One thing that does get me excited about Thanksgiving is pie. Specifically, pecan pie. I'm going to check that spouse bought some. edit/ He got Dutch Apple--and it was my idea 'cos he and younger son eat apple. Bah. Pecan pie at Christmas, then!

Boston Chicken, which since their food is so sucky, has been renamed Boston Market.

Ten years ago,"Boston Chicken" was new to me, we saw a few commercials and had a picky eater of a 5-year-old who subsisted mostly on chicken and raw veggies, so "roasted chicken" sounded like a good alternative to KFC fast food--which we all know is nutritionally horrible.

The set up was semi-fast food/semi-buffet. One looked through the glass and pointed at the sides they wished to have, it was scooped on to your plate and handed to you. The chicken was a given. It all looked better on teevee. In person, it all looked sort of yellowish-gray.

What sticks in my mind and turns my stomach the most was the greasiest chicken that's ever crossed my lips. And the sides, which are pretty much the same dreck that they push now at Boston Market, were heavy, overcooked, grease-laden, and tasteless.

Even our chicken-loving son wouldn't touch anything on his plate. I struggled through about one-third of mine before declaring it the worst food I'd ever eaten. To this day, when a commerical for "Boston Market" comes on in this house there's a collective groan in response.

Nuts on my keyboard

What's the current hottest restaurant in your city?  Have you tried it out yet?

Wildfire

I live outside Chicago. There are countless fabulous restaurants there as most people know.

However, my "village," Schaumburg wishes to appease the multitude of suburbanites who do not want to brave the ever-worsening traffic to drive into the city and therefore has quite successfully lured at least a dozen uber top-notch restaurants out here.

Schaumburg came into it's own because in the 1970's it's then-mayor decided to put his village on the map by allowing construction of the country's biggest mall. It was and continues to be an enormous success with folks coming in buses form other states to shop here. Further, the tax revenue generated by Woodfield Mall allowed the village to cut property taxes to the lowest in the area (though sales tax is a whopping 8.25%).

Schaumburg's latest desire is to become "Chicago Northwest" and to that end they have built a large convention center/hotel and as a result many new (to us) restaurants have popped up.

I chose Wildfire even though I do not know if it is the "current hottest" restaurant--I've just wanted to go to the Chicago one for some time and now like a good little suburban lemming I'll probably go to the local one rather than the city--hey, you don't have to pay for parking here--that will at least buy me dessert!

From reading the reviews, Wildfire is still pretty hot (pardon the pun) and the wait times are pretty bad. It's also very pricey so it's likely when I go it'll be for lunch on a Sunday in an effort to avoid sticker shock and the crowds.

I even have a cute little story that goes with it.

A long, long time ago I moved to a faraway land called Southern California.

I was young, fairly unschooled and unskilled and whilst I was taking classes at Golden West College (theoretically--in truth, I was skipping classes to go to the beach) I worked at a Häagen-Dazs store in nearby Seal Beach.

This was a very good thing. For one, I had my first taste of super premium ice cream. I'd been used to the grocery store brands that my dad bought so this was a BIG revelation (I also had my first Mexican food in SoCal but that's another post).

The other really good thing is that at closing time I was allowed to eat anything in the shop.

Since I was very, very poor this was an actual lifesaver. At night's end I'd make a two or three scoop sundae with a whole banana and a good sprinkling of nuts and raisins and whatever other toppings sounded good and I would call it that day's meal. Sometimes, prior to coming to work I'd have an iceberg lettuce salad but other than that on days I worked, I lived on Mocha Chip ice cream. It's really not such a bad way to live when you are 19 years old. And one would think I'd have packed on the pounds but truly if you only eat once a day, it doesn't matter if that one meal is Häagen-Dazs Ice Cream with a banana and nuts on top. You won't gain weight.

Still, since then I've rarely had my very favourite ice cream as until recently it was unavailable in any grocery stores nearby to where I now live. Besides, once you've been spoiled by fresh ice cream, eating it out of a cardboard container just doesn't cut it.

P.S. Whomever thought up this question is evil as I now have a huge craving for some Häagen-Dazs--any Häagen-Dazs but there is only one store in the Chicago area and it is 25 miles away so instead I'm going to break my "never grocery shop" rule and head over to Dominick's tomorrow to bag a pint.

Thanks. I need a pint of mega butterfat ice cream like I need a third eye.  :p

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - People who gulp several cups of coffee a day can greatly lower their risk of developing diabetes later in life, even if they are overweight, according to a U.S. study published on Tuesday.
The study of 125,000 people suggests that caffeinated coffee -- not caffeine-free -- may affect the body's metabolism in positive ways, the researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health said.

Men who drank more than six cups of full-caffeine coffee a day cut their risk of diabetes by more than half over 12 to 18 years, the study found. Women who drank that much coffee reduced their risk by 30 percent.

The researchers, led by Dr. Eduardo Salazar-Martinez, Dr. JoAnn Manson and others at Harvard and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, said caffeine is known to affect how the body handles sugar.

Caffeine also raises metabolism, they said, and may affect other aspects of metabolism such as fat oxidation and mobilization of glycogen in muscle.
"Coffee contains many other ingredients that may contribute to the inverse association," they wrote in their report.

"For example, coffee contains a substantial amount of potassium; niacin; magnesium; and antioxidant substances, such as tocopherols and phenol chlorogenic acid," they added.

I had no idea that coffee had these qualities. Antioxidants? In coffee?!

"These constituents may have beneficial effects on the development of diabetes through synergistic or independent actions on glucose metabolism and insulin resistance."

The results validate a recent Dutch study that also showed coffee-drinkers lowered their risk of diabetes.

So two studies are saying that coffee is good for you--this one is longitudinal (it was over a period of years), with a good-sized group. Okay, that's really good, right? But I thought since it speeds up your heart rate, it's bad for you.
I hate trying to figure out what I am supposed to ingest!

I suppose that there will be a spate of advertising now, touting it's benefits.

They can't beat the one by Ann Wilson of the 70's group, Heart. (Other celebs did it, but I think she was best.) Her line in a commercial for coffee was, "Coffee: it picks you up, and calms you down." And in an odd way, it's true.
