I realized that the characters are nothing alike but I can't help comparing 'Lumen' with Dexter's recently deceased wife, 'Rita.'
Both blond, pretty, very psychically damaged. Both women who've been physically abused. Both of whom Dexter struggles to find a way to seem "human" with. Granted, Dexter has changed a great deal since his early days with Rita. She taught him a lot. Certainly the "gift" of little Harrison brings out the humanity in Dexter seemingly without effort on his part. (skip down to continue)

Dexter: That's The Problem Dexter 5x08 - "Take it!" - Sneak peek #1
Debra admits to Quinn her feelings about killing Carlos Fuentes.
(cont). Dexter, though initially freaked out at the prospect of dealing with Lumen has now, with a month under his belt since he saved her, relaxed enough to consent to her staying in Miami whilst the two of them take care of the not-small task of ridding the world of the rapists, torturers and murderers that took Lumen hostage, nearly killing her before Dexter inadvertently intervened. I'm not sure how, strictly speaking, Dexter can kill every one of them if some of them did not commit murder, simply raped & tortured or is it in his mind since the end result of their escapades was multiple deaths they all get lumped into the "serial killer" category? Fine by me but Harry would probably freak out about it. Notice how there was not a peep from Harry in Episode 5x07?
I never worry about Dexter since we know that the day that he's found out by the authorities is the day the show ends, but I have to wonder what will become of Lumen. She's got herself convinced that if she and Dex kill all the men who hurt her that she will begin the long process of being OK again but even Dexter should know that the bad feelings keep coming back. For Dexter he kills successfully, has relief from/for his Dark Passenger but then later the need to kill returns. Why would it be much different for Lumen who he recognizes as a kindred spirit--both he and Lumen, "born in blood?"
She may be temporarily exultant over successfully ending the group rape/torture/killing but it really messed her up badly in the noggin' and she can't just go back to Minnesota... We are more than halfway through this season(!) so I'd like for them to touch on her long-term plans at some point "when this is finished."
