I remember when The Sopranos was on HBO before it became a massive hit--in other words as it was building it's following to unprecedented-for-HBO audience numbers. Some potential viewers were resistant to watching it because it was 'about gangsters' or 'the mob', it was ''too violent and there were no big stars in the cast, to mention a few commonly cited reasons for never having watched the show but still offering an opinion that it was bad in some way.
Once many people actually started watching the premium cable 'The Sopranos' and came to appreciate all the rest of the show which subtracting 'the violence' and the overly-simplistic summery that it was 'about the mob,' you still have 80% of the story being about the characters and the story with story setting really crucial--perhaps serving as a as core characteristic--but not the only one.
Sons of Anarchy on FX (Fox Network - 'without the box'), now finishing up it's sophomore season is exactly like the Sopranos--and nothing like them. Very different setting and tone and distinctly unique, well-drawn characters. You have to jump back to Season 1, Episode 8, I'm told if you want to 'get' SOA but don't have time to watch Season One SOA in its entirety. I still must catch up on much of Season 1 of SOA myself. I'm inclined to lean toward feeling that one should I watch all of Season 2 before going into three, eight months from now.
The season finale of 2 --surprisingly to me, felt a bit anti-climatic--and even a bit forced in places. Not true of 99% of the show that I've seen. Also, its pretty much a certainty that it will come together in a mind-blowing way when we finally reach the beginning of S3 of SOA. For now, a long, dry period. Time for me to catch up on Sons of Anarchy, Season One!
