A Small Death

When the minor symptoms first appear she denies them, downplays them, brushing them aside refusing to believe that Sickness is about to become a close companion.

Soon, when it becomes apparent that Sickness has a stronger will than she does, anger and frustration settle in and become her companions as well.

But they are a burden too heavy to carry; after a short time Sickness overwhelms them, too.

 

After several days being confined to her bed, she realizes this and begins bargaining.

"If I can be well be by tomorrow, I will..."  But Sickness has taken what it wants--her health. It wants nothing else.

The understanding of this sinks in. There's simply no bargaining to be done.

 

A sense of defeat overcomes her, self-pity and short temperedness rear their ugly heads, embracing not only her but the loved ones around her.

Soon, it's apparent that they too are sick of her being sick; the loving inquiries offering assistance are now more tired, thinly-veiled exercises in basic care.

Anything "special" about this situation has passed.

Finally, as the illness continues to colour every waking moment she accepts the reality that she has no control. None. When Sickness is done with her, it will move on.

And she will gingerly pick up the pieces and return to her life.

My brother the pre-doc...sometimes it's a little frightening. :)
I'm almost better. The stiff neck became swollen glands and with the other symptoms perfectly mimicked what is being referred to as a "really nasty virus."
