Prescriptivism has its place in the classroom, where adherance to grammatical dogma helps one to master the art. But because language is indeed an art, as is any other form of self-expression, the rules (to borrow from the brilliant "Pirates of the Caribbean") are more like guidelines. The golden rule of grammar: stick with the 'rules' unless you have a good reason not to.

What truly bugs prescriptivists, I believe, is the fact that most people have forgotten or never learned the 'rules' of grammar. The ignorance is thus expressed, and ignorance always sounds bad.
