My older son asked the younger one and me out for what he called "brunch" this afternoon to Eggcentric, a kinda nifty-looking breakfast-and-lunch only place--and he sprung for his brother too, though he balked when Chris tried to order a salmon/egg dish. (My spouse had to work, but did the bouquet of roses thing and cards. Flowers are nice but I like 'em best outside, growing--no complaints though--again, the gesture trumps.)
Best part by far was sharing a meal out with my two boys (it was a yummy avocado, bacon and cheese omelet and "your-choice-of" stuff).
For many years my oldest son gave me nothing--really nothing--he'd skip the day entirely--and it wasn't because I was a bad or neglectful mom.
So this year was really nice. It wasn't extravagant (in terms of the meal out) but the gesture was lovely.
It's nice when we treat one another "extra" specially sometimes--I think it brings out the best in us.
