Now Shut Up And Go Drink Your Goddamn Corn Syrup
By Mark Morford - morningfix@sfgate.com
Some schools are finally making moves to get soft drinks out of schools -- but often the replacement drinks they choose are just as bad or worse, because in a economy-gutted BushCo-ravaged world, they are nothing if not sad whores for corporate cash. Last week, the American Academy of Pediatrics called on its members to push schools to remove soft drinks from school vending machines as a big step toward improving childhood nutrition and curbing the obesity epidemic. Fearful of losing millions in annual revenue from vending contracts with noxious soft-drink companies, schools are replacing soda with sports drinks and flavored beverages made by the same companies that may sound healthier, but often have at least as much sugar and calories as Coke and Pepsi, and in this way schools can pretend they give a crap about student health and pretend like they're responding to parent outcries and feign ignorance about corn syrup toxicity as they meanwhile pack their vending machines with grape Snapple. "Please ignore this item and move along nothing to see here no really," said one school official, all vitality completely drained from his soul from trying in vain to keep his school afloat in a world of budget cuts and screeching parents.

Heart disease is the UK's biggest killer.
No surprise really when you consider some of the nation's fav foods. We had no idea they were bad for us.

UK schools vary a lot (and I do mean a lot) from place to place.
Some have very good healthy and apertising school dinners programmes. Some serve complete crap.
Not sure whether modern schools have vending as they get suspitious of adults (especialy ones with no kids) snooping around schools, dunno why.
They didn't have vending machine in my day is all I can say. But in my day 80% of kids avoided the school canteen like the plaugue and wandered into the local village for either a meat pastie from the bakers or a chip buttie from the chineese take away.

In MY day....we didn't have soda machines (or, for that matter, ANY machines) in the lunch room. You brought a bag lunch or you suffered the cafeteria slop, complete with chocolate milk. Mmmm...chocolate milk...*goes to search the frig*...

After reading your comments, I'm wondering if you could tell me what grammar schools are like in the UK? In the US, the soda pop and snack machines are available in schools beginning in grade seven and continue through high school. Thankfully, the younger children don't have the options of eating candy bars and coke for lunch unless they bring it from home.

This isn't something I was aware of before the programme we saw last night. I find it amazing that a society would put their kids in this position!! It's disgusting.

Yes we saw a program that mentioned this last night. Corn syrup in the US is cheap because its home grown. Cheap = profitable.
Children are getting enlarged livers in the same way they overfeed geese with corn to make their livers enlarge for that expensive pate foie gras.
But so long as the profit machine keeps rolling who cares?
