I really don't understand the American thing with the flag-- maybe a need to express strong patriotism?
I understand your sentiments. The Canadians don't "flaunt" their flag either--and I lean more toward that view than then American one (I'm a Canadian-American hybrid--citizen of Canada, resident of the US for most of my life).
There are more flags up now than "normal," (at least in this neck of the woods) due to the war in Iraq and I suppose, since September 11, 2001.
This one though, is next to a memorial by the railroad tracks where about a dozen school children were crushed by a train as the school bus's back end hung over the track area.
I toyed with the idea of cropping the flag out but I left the pic unadulterated--no cropping or other manipulating.

I like the photo, but it reminds me of how I can never understand the American thing with the flag. If you put flags up on your property over here, everyone assumes you're either a racist, or a bit strange in the head.

No handbad scrambling. I was out "on the hunt" for a good photo as I had a long drive to make. The camera was on the seat beside me. But as I mentioned, downshifting and snapping at the same time was a bit uh, dangerous.

Well snapped. How much frantic handbag scrambling did that involve?

Thanks Jack. It's either courage or stupidity to drive a stick shift and shoot, but I saw that shot coming and went for it.
